Everything we do should be done as we are led by the Spirit, but flattery is some kind of manipulation which actually borders on witchcraft.

You do know there's no such thing as magic or witchcraft, don't you? Oh and by the way, the year is 2010, not 1610.
You mean "flattery" as in "Don't you look nice today?" or "You did a great job" ?????
I didn't know I needed to get my book of spells out to encourage or be nice to someone. Thanks for setting me straight
This isn't actually the whole answer. The question was: "How is the flattering mouth a trap that works ruin?" (In reference to Proverbs 26:28 and 29:25). The full answer from Marj (who, by the way, was not chosen by the asker as the best answer):
"It's talking about deceiving them through flattery in order to get them to like you and support you for wrong reasons. Everything we do should be done as we are led by the Spirit, but flattery is some kind of manipulation which actually borders on witchcraft."
I get the feeling she was actually being at least partially metaphorical (since witchcraft can be interpreted as manipulating reality for your own desires).
I'm probably wrong here, but I read it as "if the Spirit leads one to rape, that's OK, but flattery, thence seduction, is evil"...?
Don't flatter yourself that you are worthy of attention because you imagine that you are adept at offering sage advice and pithy aphorisms to the lowly and untutored masses who you further imagine are in need of guidance. Specially when the best you can do is to garble asinine comments on Y! Answers. Dream on cretin.
Note the distinct lack of flattery used by me. I'm about as far removed from witchcraft as it's possible to be.
At first I was thinking "hm, this doesn't really look fundie yet, just religious."
Then, I reached the second part of the quote...
One thing, though - why wasn't the full quote put in?
"It's talking about deceiving them through flattery in order to get them to like you and support you for wrong reasons. Everything we do should be done as we are led by the Spirit, but flattery is some kind of manipulation which actually borders on witchcraft."
@Skynight
Wow. See, in context that kinda makes sense since some people actually will use flattery to manipulate others. It's not witchcraft, it's just a douchebag thing to do.
I kinda feel like we dropped the ball on this one by taking it out of context/removing bits that explain what this was actually about.
Flattery, as in empty words to make someone do something for your, sure. In your deluded world that might be witchcraft, as you make someone doing something with the power of your mind...
Flattery, as in trying to make someone else feel good, without ulterior motive, though, erm, it's actually the same here too.
Do you need an explanation for the idea of "without ulterior motive"?
"Everything we do should be done as we are led by the Spirit, but flattery is some kind of manipulation which actually borders on witchcraft."
So... every time you're in church Marj, worshipping and singing hymns, you're just kissing your God's Holy Heiney. Therefore...
