[I included the whole article because you need to read the thing in context. But if you get the chance, do read the comments. They are also FSTDT-worthy material.)

Let's just say, you know for a fact that eating children is wrong. A great number of people believe as you do and we all acknowledge it in unity. Then there is a website that says that eating babies is fine that you don't need to "buy into it" and believe that eating babies is wrong. There is a couple of blogs that talk all day how liberating and fantastic eating children are. Now whoever listens to them think they are crazy and very wrong but a few listen to the intellect behind the reasoning, they listen to the argument. Let's say the argument says it's natural for many animals eat their young in nature, and people are just a part of the natural process or something like that. Some people buy into it and start doing it.

You struggle everyday as to why people think like that, they all must be crazy, what do they know that you don't? This goes on and on but after a while you get curious. You then start to go around thinking why you don't get to eat babies as others do and how some people demand that you don't, like your parents. Then one day you get an opportunity to do it but everything in your soul KNOWS it is wrong. You shake at the thought of eating that very young child. It's agonizing to you for quite a while, you cuss at yourself for having such insane thoughts!

One day you see a little 5 year old at some playground and you convince yourself that you have to know what it's like. You seize the moment and kidnap the child. You keep that child tied up for days agonizing whether you should do it or not. You almost feel yourself slipping away into insanity to the point you can't take it. So you get the nerve somehow, and do it. Then afterwords you say to yourself that it was too quick that you need to try it again to see if the feelings you had during were genuine. So flash ahead a month and you have done it many times and you now frequent places that do it and go online to websites that also do it and you feel a sense of a warm community. You struggle with the nightmares until they pass and you feel OK. You embrace the fact that you are now a baby eater and you and your new friends are OK with it. The struggle get's a little easier to accept the notion that eating babies is fine for the natural process. You teach you own kids that it is perfectly natural to eat babies. You start your own website that is called "Eat babies!" and you showcase your work.

Is this what an atheist goes through when they start to not believe in God? The stories of struggles, that I have heard, turning away from God are similar to this scenario. Many authors talk about the struggle they go through from belief to non belief. The agonizing pain it causes themselves as well as their families. Could atheists talk themselves into anything? The methodical erosion of ones values and morals can be so damaging, to the point that it's acceptable that"Atheists eat babies."

An atheist may still be moral and say murder and rape are wrong: but when asked why, they will not have a final reason or authority to which they can appeal.

Hey, babies are tasty. And the meat is very tender.

Fucking idiot. I have jokingly said that Christians believe that atheists eat babies, but this dumbass just reinforces the idea.

And the only struggle I had when I was losing my religious beliefs was trying to come up with good reasons to keep them.

What is it with fundies and their ability to dream up the most depraved fantasies?

I'm not sure if it's just me just waking up for the day, but it seems like this fundie is likening being an Atheist with child cannibalism.

"An atheist may still be moral and say murder and rape are wrong: but when asked why, they will not have a final reason or authority to which they can appeal."

This is usually the point in a discussion where I give up on having a rational conversation and instead put on my most serious face possible and claim the Doctor as the source of all moral authority.

Atheism=small child killing

What. The. Fuck.

If people had no God, they would still be moral. Why? Because they don't need a magic sky daddy to think from other people's point of view. Why do you think so?

That's one seriously elaborate fantasy there. I'm impressed. Also a little creeped out.

*sigh* It's actually very easy to have an "absolute morality" without a deity. Simple. We're a social species. Our goals are to create stable, long-lasting societies. You can't have a stable society if a subset of your society is given free reign to attack and eat children.

I read about the afterlife

"An atheist may still be moral and say murder and rape are wrong: but when asked why, they will not have a final reason or authority to which they can appeal."

Oh too easy. From the evolutionary standpoint that our goal ought to be to prolong our species -- murder is clearly wrong, as is rape. We are social animals. We need a system that is based on trust and well-being in order to sustain our species. If murder and rape were moral -- our species would die out.

EDIT: Damn, Corwin beat me too it.

*facepalm* When you start a paragraph out like that I know whatever follows will be mind-numbingly inane.

I wonder if this guy thinks that empathy, a sense of justice, and a sense of fairness are moral foundations created by SATAN(tm)?

You give no rational argument that it should be wrong to eat children, other than 'most people' agree that it's wrong. I think you need to back up and weigh the pros and cons of this activity.

Now do the same with atheism.

See the difference?

It's clear that you aren't bright enough to understand what atheists are saying about their struggles to let go of a long-held belief system which they have come to believe is untrue (as opposed to your scenario of their trying to come to grips with embracing something they know is morally wrong), so you really should steer clear of trying to come up with stupid analogies which totally miss the point.

Here I thought it would turn into an anti-gay argument.. would make more sense.. though it'd still be batshit insane.

Anyway, to this guy, it very much should be acceptable if atheists ate their babies! Because according to his beloved Bible nonbelievers will eat their own kids, which means that as long as we don't the Bible is wrong. And THAT is unacceptable.

Look, my friends and I joke all the time that we eat babies, ever since we read A Modest Proposal two years ago.

This, however, is just fucked up. I don't think my belief in a deity has any connections to cannibalism.

"An atheist may still be moral and say murder and rape are wrong: but when asked why, they will not have a final reason or authority to which they can appeal."

Hate to break it to you, but most people who hold religious beliefs don't do so because they can't keep themselves from raping and murdering people without the threat of hellfire hanging over them.

Since I have never been religious but an atheist from the day I was born, I have never had any struggles in regards to believing in your comic book heroes. Quite the opposite, I always chuckle and sometimes I laugh hysterically when people talk nonsense about their favorite comic book god.

Confessions Of An Atheist Monster Part One.

O the heart-rending tales of the never-ending struggle and inner turmoil that one must endure daily as one wrestles with the fierce forces of atheistic power that bludgeon one. And yet, one never completely gives up hope. One day, one may be free of the mighty 'a', one may cease ones atheism and become a partial atheist or, as partial atheists like to refer to themselves as, a theist.

I well remember that day when I started to not believe in God. Even now, I can't repress the awful shudders that involuntarily shake my very spiritual fibre as the memories flood back. It was a fine autumnal day, a bit blustery, other than that, quite warm but breezily invigorating, and I was just half a day old. As I suckled at my mother's breast, a thought came to me, and I said, translating from the babyish, "I know, I'll not believe in God". What I actually said of course, in between sucks of the breast, was, "Goo goo gah gah, gah gah goo goo, gah gah.". Before I knew it, I was not believing in Allah, Zeus, Odin, and thousands of other gods and goddesses as well as the Christian blighter.

And so it was that on that rather humdrum autumn morning at the age of half a day, I became an atheist monster.

I will shortly recount the horrors that followed in part two of my memoirs.

So what final reason or authority do YOUR views have? Just because you cite the Bible means nothing. Your feeling that a god wants one thing or another is meaningless until you prove that god exists and prove his/her desires.

My convictions that rape and murder are wrong is based upon logic, empathy and a reasonable knowledge of history.

P.S. Ate a couple of babies this morning. Baby carrots, that is.
