The reality was that slaves were very GOOD workers, despite often harsh conditions. One major reason that "poor white trash" in the South supported slavery even though they did not own slaves themselves was that they feared that mass manumission of slaves would throw so many competent workers into the labor pool that they would be unable to compete. Of course, not every slavemaster was a Simon Legree, but there certainly were abject cruelties. There were also kindnesses on the part of slavemasters toward their slaves, but that does not justify slavery.
