If I told you that your child would get 50 million dollars if you, the father, would just punch him in the face and put him in the hospital for a few weeks. Most people would do this because the temporary pain of a few weeks in the hospital is NOTHING compared to the 50 million you would have after 3 weeks of being in the hospital.

Heaven is like that 50 million dollars, except there's a LOT more where that came from.

I'm sure you have the moral capacity to strike your child in the face hard enough to cause severe lacerations, bone fracturing, and possible eyesight loss, creating a need for extensive reconstructive surgery for the price of $50 million.

I would say no amount of money is worth putting anyone through that level of agony. I say instead that to raise them free of unjust injury in a home full of love is worth more than any amount of money. I think this is the clear difference between atheists and Christianists. We treat now as the time we care for while you are willing to do any amount of injury in the hopes for something which may or may not exist.

I wouldn't harm them to the extent that they needed hospitalisation for 'a few weeks' for any money, but yeah, I'd almost certainly punch my daughter really hard in the face for $50 million. Jezus man, its 50 million bucks after all! Frankly, I know my dauughter pretty well and I'm almost certain she'd agree for that sort of cash...

But to address your argument as it actually should be to properly represent your religon, if someone told me that if i punched my kid in the face they'd promise to give me $50 million, but no i can't see the $50 million or evidence that it exists or evidence that you own it and can give it to me and no there is no binding legal contract that you will give it to me, then I'd tell you to fuck off.

On one hand, his alalogy is a little more apt than he think sit is. On the surface, it's just a little harship, right? A few weeks recovering in the hospital, versus just not sleeping with men, or not dancing the night away with the girls, or a number of other seemingly trivial things. However, the psychological trauma of having a trusted loved one turning on said child has a far greater reach than a few weeks. Even if you spent the rest of your life explaining to the child that it was only done to get him a fortune, enough to last him the rest of his life, the child will never, ever be able to trust you fully again, always having to wonder waht else could bring out that brutality once more. Likewise, repressing any and all desires you may have, shunning men to force yourself either to women, or a life of celibacy, or shutting down your libido tend to have nasty psychological effects. Just look through here to see what happens when a sublimated sex drive is faced with even the slightest whiff of temptation.

However, where this falls flat, as is pointed out here, is that it's not like "Punch your kid, and he gets $50M." It's "punch your kid, and when he moves away from home, we cut off all contact between you and him, disallow him living in even the same country as you, and once he's far, far away, then we'll give him the $50M." You have no guarantee. You can't confirm the kid ever gets a dime. For all you know, you beat your child to hospitalization for nothing at all.

Even if most people would choose to accept temporary suffering for a long term reward, it is not fair to inflict suffering on others without their will and justifying that with a long-term reward. A father that did the amount of damage you describe to his own son without seeing whether he agreed with it or not is a terrible father, regardless of the amount of money on the line. If the son was fine with it though, it's a little less problematic.
Also, problem with the analogy: the person GIVING the 50 million dollars is also the father/God. In other words, he has 50 million dollars and doesn't NEED to punch you to do so, because He makes the rules. Soooo....he's just giving away the money as a way to justify the beatings, essentially. Even if the benefit outweighs the cost, it's still blatantly evil.

Screw you, buddy, I would never punch a child in the face, not my kid, and not anyone else's. It's not your decision to make; you are depriving your child of their right to not be punched in the face.

@lolwut -- yes, but the point is the child doesn't get a say. The father decides to hurt the child unnecessarily without his/her consent in order to benefit them later.

Meanwhile, this metaphor only works if the father is the one who has the $50 million, invents the game, and then tells the kid he's going to punch her regardless, but if she continues to love him afterward, he'll give her $50 million.

Dude, money ruins a lot of people. I'd rather my kid had only enough money to live well, take ace vacations, and cover any dire emergencies. If you have enough that you never have to work, you're probably never going to achieve anything or overcome challenges.
