Marriage was never owned by the Christian church. Marriage existed in multiple cultures long before. It was a means to pass wealth through the male heir in most cases.

Christians hijacked the "true meaning of marriage" in about the year 900 (give or take a few decades).

But all of that is moot really, since, in this country, marriage is an institution of the State. I can get married w/o your church and w/o your permission.

You are a traitor to this country when you deny basic rights of your fellow citizens: i.e., prohibiting one adult from marrying another adult.

And how in thee fuck does the marriage of two adults who love each other violate a free society?!

You're the bastards taking away freedom from other adults.

2) Atheists don't want a civilized, free society?

Both of these are new to me. Also, democracy is not based on marriage nor is marriage required for freedom and civilization to exist.

Wow! I live in a civilised free country too. Not America, but still!

Let's see what our constitution says about main building blocks of our civilised free country.

"...The constitution shall guarantee the inviolability of human dignity and the freedom and rights of the individual and promote justice in society. ..."

Hrrrm. This is weird.

Bloody heck. I wonder if the folks who wrote our constitution had some sort of a weird, Communist idea about what the fundamental building block of a society is?

Weird, huh? The only place our constitution mentions marriage is in the native-born citizenship, and even there it's just broadly termed as "parents" - not necessarily male and female only. Besides that, it babbles about "individuals"... "everyone"... "no one"... "citizens".

Society doesn't need marriage to function. Individuals may need that, if you're into that sort of thing.

But maybe America is different? Maybe you have some strange constitutional clauses that determine the underpinnings of the society in a way alien to us? If that is indeed the case, enlighten me!

The Communists that "Clouds" fears so much were comparing homosexuals to fascists in the 1930's and these homosexuals were portrayed as bourgeois agents.

In Albania under Enver Hoxha homosexuals were accused of being "chauvinistic" towards women, and therefore lesbianism was tolerated (for allegedly helping to promote gender equality) whereas gays got the concentration camp. That's the closest a socialist state ever got towards tolerating any sort of homosexual behavior (unless you count Bolshevik Russia for a few years, where homosexuality was semi-tolerated in the government, Leningrad and Moscow because all the Tsarist laws were abolished, yet homosexuality remained hated in the rest of the country).

Not a single state that claimed socialism was ever tolerant towards homosexuality. If it wasn't viewed as socially deviant, it was viewed as a product of capitalism that would go away under socialism (and if it didn't, then that just meant the gays were capitalists and had to be... encouraged to go away, if you get my drift).

Even if we talk about communist groups in America, in the 1980's many still saw homosexuality as a "social protest" against capitalism rather than an actual permanent sexual preference.

Marriage is a legally recognised contract between two persons. Religion doesn't enter into it. How do you explain municipal Registry Offices? Besides, from the point of view of we Atheists, what you say is a bad thing... how?

Unless it's a Communist or Fascist dictatorship, as long as said state is of a Social Democratic nature (the Scandinavian countries, for example), then there's no way it can do any worse. I take it that you, Clouds (and everyone else on Ruptured Retards) have never seen the documentary film "Jesus Camp":
