Criticizing Conservapedia is like shooting fish in a barrel. Every single page there is worthy of WTF. This particular example is mild compared to the likes of "Conservative Bible Project".

Neither do people doing French Literature. Physicists, on the other hand, actually find it quite useful.
"Do something logical, such as editing the Bible" - I am literally weeping with laughter at that. Schlafly has truly gone off the deep end, and quite possibly needs proper medical attention of some kind.

"Inventor" isn't a professional field like doctor. You don't go to "inventor" school. I'm quite sure that many inventors in various fields have studied the theory of relativity at some point or other. Doctors don't need to know this particular theory in order to do what they do. Just because it's something a doctor doesn't need to know doesn't make it worthless or insignificant.

From the main page:
"The theory of relativity is a mathematical system that allows no exceptions. It is heavily promoted by liberals who like its encouragement of relativism and its tendency to mislead people in how they view the world."
The true irony here is that despite its name, Theory of Relativity is actually about invariants - that is, absolutes. Speed of light (and other laws of physics) are absolute. Spacetime is absolute. Mass-energy four-vector - the spacetime version of momentum - is absolute.
The theory simply explores the consequences of these absolutes.

Would writing a warning label for the bible (not unlike what fundies want to put on 'Origin of the Species') count as editing it?
Have it say something to the effect of how the contents represent the worldview of the authors and employs some illogical but creative methods to explain the world around them. People who have treated this book as truth have used it to commit unspeakable atrocities. Read this book at your own risk.

Andy Schlafly's collusion of Theory of Relativity and Moral Relativism has inspired me to come up with a few new laws:
1) Special Relativism: The faster the person posts on the wikis/blogs/forums (before finally thinking the idea through), the less crazy their morality seems to them personally. It still seems pretty damn crazy to outside observers.
2) General Relativism: The crazier the person's morality is, the more they disappear out of sight of the others, inside what is known as the gigantic "well of craziness". Again, they seem to be oblivious to this fact, due to their extremely flexible rhetoric that just paints their opponents with broad strokes of contempt no matter where they are.

...Altering a well-known, highly circulated book to suit your own political views is "logical?"
8/29/2010 4:59:35 AM
So fucking what? None of the disciplines you listed need to know relativity on order to perform their duties. Astronomers and physicist, on the other hand, do.
Besides Assfly, you can't even begin to understand the Theory of Relativity since you equate it with your favourite buzzword "moral relativity". The fact that you don't know there is a difference speaks volumes.
How in hell did you ever get a law degree?

This is ff the wall. Why would my docor need to study evolution in any great detail? Ot the inventor of the telphone or the Gay inventor of the computor?
As for the Bible, it dosn't need editing so much as a uniform translation and interpretation - not that either would avail to much good purpose. It will still be a story book.

Perhaps Mr Schlafly, would care to consider the LHC, by way of a demonstration of relativistic effects. Such a synchrotron could not be made to function without the application of the theories of Special Relativity by the engineers and scientists that designed it. What's more; synchrotrons, though smaller than the LHC, find use in many branches of science - notably materials science, this can hardly be dismissed as useless.
It may also be edifying to note that gold would lack its famous colour were it not for relativistic effects.

How about the television picture tube? The electrons in a CRT move at a sufficient fraction of the speed of light that their increase in mass has to be accounted for in order to aim the electron beam properly. We did an experiment to demonstrate this in Physics 101. While the earliest CRTs may have been designed by the seat of the pants, by the 1960s color CRTs needed a more precise idea of where the electrons were going and why.

Y'know, as a future M.D. I'm calling your bullshit.
I had physics in highschool.
8/29/2010 7:26:31 AM
Yes, Schlafly's correct, the Bible does need a lot of editing, its abhorrence is not horrible enough to suit present day right-wing extremism. A deranged psycho needs a Bible to more accurately reflect his lack of empathy for other humans and to be aligned with modern practices. For example, the smelly and straggly beard of the deranged psychopathic cultist is no longer de rigueur. Also, deluded death cultists need the Bible to portray more exactly their self-loathing and to highlight more definitively their unworthiness and sinfulness. To that end, a major excision needs to take place between, say, the beginning of Genesis and, shall we say, the end of Revelation, except for a few 'untos' and 'begats', and for modern assertions to be inserted in place of the excised material. This will be more in keeping with current torture methods and contemporary political spin.
Sometimes, even God needs to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
8/29/2010 8:09:52 AM
Andy, what the fuck are you smoking?
8/29/2010 9:05:30 AM
This is so beautifully stupid and self-absorbed, that I could just die of happiness.
8/29/2010 9:13:05 AM
Right. Don't ever learn anything unless its practical application has already been defined and be certain to never use that knowledge for anything else. Moron.
P.S. I have already edited the Bible. It now has no words at all.
8/29/2010 10:06:55 AM
You fail medicine forever. You fail engineering forever. You fail science forever. You fail the Bible forever. You fail framing arguments forever.
Oh, wait. You're Andy Schlafly.
You fail everything forever.
8/29/2010 10:08:01 AM
Editing the Bible?
That's a sin, you'll burn.
8/29/2010 10:59:59 AM
"Do something logical, such as editing the Bible"
OK, I'll remove the bullshit, misogny, genocidal tirades of a petty tyrant known as "god," demonstrably false assertions ... OK, I've whittled it down to the Sermon on the Mount.*
* While I don't believe in that character's divinity, it is still awesome. If christianists followed it I could tolerate them.
8/29/2010 11:23:32 AM
...inventors and doctors and engineers don't typically even bother learning relativity.
Why would they? Relativity is a concept in Physics not Engineering or Medicine.
Moreover, Inventor is not a specific discipline and the nature of the invention is what would determine whether or not the Theories of Relativity or Special Relativity were applicable.
Should I repeat that?
Don't bother, you will just come off looking even stupider than you do now
Complain to engineering departments and medical schools if you think that should change.
I highly doubt that Relativity is required studies in engineering or medical schools.
Nothing useful has even been designed or built using relativity
Nor is that the purpose of Relativity.
If you want to look and look and look for a counterexample then you'll be wasting your time.
I wouldn't need to, nor would anyone else who understands even the basics of physics, medicine, or engineering.
I'm not going to waste mine.
Which is why you don't have the first fucking clue what you are talking about.
This is my final reply on this topic for now.
Because any further comment would only serve to magnify your already legendary ignorance.
Do something logical
Andy, you have already demonstrated you don't even know what logic is.
such as editing the Bible
Editing the unchanging and eternal "word of god"? You really are a hypocrite of the first class.
and after benefiting from that experience we can revisit this issue in a month or so
And give you time to fabricate even more bullshit rather than, I don't know, research the fucking subject?
8/29/2010 11:42:20 AM
It's fucking rocket science, why would Assfly get it?
8/29/2010 12:11:13 PM
I'm guessing that since Andy doesn't understand it, he thinks it has no useful purpose for anything, like his conservative bible.
And for that matter, does Andy really serve any useful purpose other than for us to laugh at?
8/29/2010 12:33:13 PM
Im studying mechanical engineering and i've been taught general and special relativity. You fail
8/29/2010 12:41:27 PM
"Do something logical, such as editing the Bible..."
Your share of Heaven is hereby revoked, Andy.
18For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
