Well, to be fair politics tend to swing between more liberal and more conservative phases, but overall as a nation we have become more liberal than previous times in history. For example, we no longer have slavery, interracial marriage is no longer a big deal, and we're making some progress on gay rights too.

The immediate future lies with the smart, aggressive and ruthless.

Okay, I get why the aggressive and ruthless might running things is bad, but why the hell is it a bad thing for the smart to run things? Is it because that pretty much guarantees that fundies won't get a shot?

As for the meek

I love this. Christians are simultaneously the largest religion ever with 80% of the US being Christian and apparently a meek and extremely oppressed minority at the same fucking time.

> The immediate future lies with the smart, aggressive and ruthless.

Yes. And the long-term future lies with whatever is considered a good idea. We can always take solace in the thought that the aggressive and the ruthless think they're kind of a big deal, but they get forgotten once good stuff starts happening again.

Apologies for pulling the typical debate topics out, but hey, Hitler was smart, aggressive and ruthless. Look how popular he got back in the day. Then look how popular his ideas are today.

Funny, liberalism has been around for a couple hundred years now, and has only grown. Passing? I think you're thinking of conservatives who fear the future and seek to remain in the past. Sure they're aggressive and ruthless about it. They run around creating an atmosphere of fear and do heinous acts to get their way, often in the guise of something holy. But if you remove their masks, you'll see that conservatives are the ones that are afraid. It is the "meek" liberal who moves forward in bold strides to meet the future..

We have seen the way you want societies to be run. It does not work. Liberalism does.

Siddhartha Gautama was an atheist, and he died around 400 years before Christ was allegedly born. How long is a passing phenomenon, exactly? At least four hundred years longer than Christianity, it seems...

You know, considering that he says the meek are the ones who're blessed in another post, by saying "The immediate future lies with the smart, aggressive and ruthless," he seems to be implying that Christians are stupid. Why do these people always treat intelligence as a bad thing?

Liberalism, like atheism, is a passing phenomenon.

Conservatism like religion, is a pissing phenomenon!

Atheists have been around for a very, very, very long time. Also, you're directly contradicting your Christ. I think they call that...oh, there's a word for it, starts with a B....

"The point is that Jesus (regardless of his existence or not) was liberal both by the standards of the day, and the standards of the lunatic fundamentalists today whether he fits your personal definition of liberal or not is totally irrelevant!"

Liberalism, like atheism, is a passing phenomenon. (As someone once put it, it's the transient moment between exhaling Christianity and inhaling something else.)

There have been liberals and atheists in this country even before there was a United States. Even our country is liberal in a few key aspects, no state church for example. Even in ancient Athens there where what we'd now call atheists and liberals.

The immediate future lies with the smart, aggressive and ruthless.

Okay I understand aggressive and ruthless being bad, but smart? Why do conservatives worship at the alter of stupid? I mean really how is having a leader that is smart a bad thing?

While the entry is hypocritical and stupid, as usual, what I don't get is how many replies seem to state that ruthlessness and aggression can never be used for good. I mean, if the 2000 Democratic political campaign had a bit of either, maybe the West wouldn't be sinking into the mire as it is now.

@SleepNeed: Piltdown Man would seem to be a turbo-Catholic who disagrees very strongly with the direction the church has taken since Vatican II. In other threads on Pharyngula, he apparently suggested that a strong Christian warrior class would arise out of whatever is left after liberalism finally causes Western society to implode out of a need to protect Christendom against threats from outside or within. He also hinted that democracy was a mistake whenever non-Christians or people from heretical Christian sects are enfranchised.

Funny how liberalism keeps winning and conservatism keeps losing. Like how conservatives spent 50 years demonising Martin Luther King and now Batty Beck is claiming the be the second coming of MLK.

Atheism has been around for as long as the gullible have believed in gods. As for liberalism, it has existed for as long as there have been conservatives in politics. Your Founders would have been considered liberals in their day.
Neither is a passing fad.

They shall inherent the earth? I like how he admits he's a wannabe murdering fascist.

eta: Wait, was he trying to say HE was the meek, after saying he was aggressive and ruthless? Try to not contradict yourself in the space of 4 sentences, dumbass.

The point is that he was trying to overthrow the established government and way of life and promoted socialist ideas. After all, he did say "it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." He aided the poor and the sick, preached war and upheaval and condemned the established churches and religious organizations. As for how he viewed gentiles, it differs depending on the gospel you're citing. Matthew, for example, is very Hebrew-centric.

Plenty of people--such as Chairman Mao, Lenin, Castro, and Che Guevara--were considered violent revolutionaries and yet were just as liberal as Jesus Christ. They promoted hostility in the same way he did: for the good of their political ideology. I'm not condoning the actions of any of these men, merely explaining that they are, in fact, extremely liberal.

I am NOT saying Jesus was a good man, just that his ideas leaned very much to the left. You seem to assume that these are one in the same.
