The man is very well within his rights. He joined the military to fight for a country he loves, which is infested with people who hate him. Regardless of his faith, he's among fellow patriots (true patriots, not the Real American (tm) chickenhawks who claim to be) and should be treated as such goddamnit.

I know he meant it as a metaphor. However, every time I read this quote, I can't help but imagine Spec. Klawonn actually riding that raft all the way across the Atlantic and arriving in the Suez Canal, making landfall waving an American flag and playing "America, Fuck Yeah" as he steps onto dry land (blasting his soundtrack from a bacon boombox he created as he crossed the Atlantic).
