This was posted this year? Have you been under a rock for the past couple of decades? This was what people thought the world was coming to in the 1980s.
Twenty years on, most people are still heterosexual, but those who aren't are treated less cruelly and given a fairer chance than they used to be.

I have always found it rather strange that gay people would wish to remain part of a religion that by and large hates them, and calls for their execution. And no, I don't care how much some of the more moderate, and liberal denominations try to candy coat, and deny it, Christianity is inherently anti-gay.

No, in recent years people have become more tolerant, particularly the young, who also are becoming non-religious in large percentages. Which means that as the older generations die out the United States will become a more tolerant and less bible-god dick sucking of a society.

Books such as "Heather Has Two Mommies" and "Daddy's Roommate" don't promote homosexuality. They just make people aware that such people exist and ought to be treated with the same respect we show to others. If there was a book about what it's like to live with blindness, and hints about how such people should be treated and respected, would that be "promoting blindness"? Would kids all start poking their eyes out so they could be blind, too?
I actually would like to some day read Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy's Roommate . I don't see what's wrong with having such books in high schools, at the very least. If you think homosexuality in books is bad, you should see a lot of the books in my high school library! Your head would explode!
I don't know if the high school I go to has those two books you mentioned, Kimmie, but I know for a fact that the staff there would have zero problem with putting them on the shelves. The only deciding factor would be money. I'm aware of three novels at our school library which depict homosexuality. These three novels don't even promote homosexuality they just don't ignore the fact that it exists and that it might actually not be a bad thing. They deal with the protagonist's confusion, coming to terms with their homosexuality, and finding their place in a homophobic world. One of them doesn't even have homosexuality as the main theme the protagonist's best friend turns out to be gay, and this doesn't come to light until near the end.
I doubt many or even any kids at my school have read any of these three books, or even know they're in our library. There are lots of books here that most kids in the school haven't read. They aren't being "promoted" they're just there. They're available. What's the big deal? The staff at our school like their students to have a wide selection of reading material.
Homosexuality per se isn't the "in thing"; LGBT support is the "in thing". I.e., not being a bigoted discriminating prejudiced asshole is the "in thing". Fighting for equal rights is the "in thing" now that racial equality and sex equality can stand on their own two feet, we're simply moving on to another issue. I don't see a problem with this. Equal rights for all should always be the "in thing".

Reading about stuff like that makes me so unbelieveably grateful that I live where I live and go to the school that I do.
At the school I go to, people honestly don't give a fuck if you're gay. Even in middle school, it wasn't much of a big deal. I remember that one of my classmates was pretty unpopular in grade 7. He was teased more than most (and I was one of those who teased, I'm ashamed to admit). But in grade 8 he became more sure of himself and was less afraid to be himself, and he gained more acceptance and respect from everyone because of it. His coming out almost seemed to seal the deal. I sensed that everyone respected him more for taking that risk.
PART 2
Last year, I don't think anyone took a partner of the same sex to the prom (I didn't go), but I can almost guarantee that the school wouldn't have had a problem if someone had wanted to. Our school formed a gay-straight alliance last year and has a few LGBT posters on the bulletin board outside the library. We had a Health Day one year, and I remember there being a lot of LGBT material.
My friends and I have also done Day of Silence for three years now, and our teachers have always been very supportive. One of my teachers was positively gushing when I told her what the purpose of the Day of Silence was. Last year, when a couple of boys were teasing me about not talking, the teacher told them off and praised me and another boy for what we were doing.
Kimmie is so up-in-arms about schools seeming to "promote" homosexuality, but she doesn't realize that they wouldn't NEED to if homosexuals weren't discriminated against in the first place. If things were already equal among all orientations, then yeah, promoting homosexuality would elicit a "WTF?" from me. It would seem like a "homosexual supremacy" thing, and that would creep people out as much as white supremacy, black supremacy, female supremacy, male supremacy...any supremacy. But things aren't equal yet. When it's safe to "back down", we'll back down, but not a moment sooner. Got it?
