Quote# 76322

Today at work a co-worker and I were on our breaks at the same time. We had to eat out in the lobby (I work at a McDonald's) because the store manager was talking to another employee about something. He was making small talk and then out of nowhere asked me what I thought about the mosque in New York. I said that it shouldn't be built because of what Muslims did on 9/11. He said something about not all Muslims being that way. I said that Islam is a religion that tells its adherents to kill those who won't submit. He said (I'm paraphrasing but it was pretty close to this), "Well, I won't kill you if you don't submit." I kind of suspected that he was a Muslim but now I finally knew. And I have to admit, that last thing he said chilled me to the bone.

Anyway, I had a great opportunity to witness and I failed. I just froze up; I wasn't really sure what to say. I've never actually spoken to a person who's holy book tells him to kill me and everyone else that worships the true Living God. I don't know if I'm asking for advice or just sharing a story.

The Bible tells you to kill anyone who works on the Sabbath (Exodus 31:12-15).

Is McDonald's open on the Sabbath?

If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you.(Deuteronomy 13:7-12)

You sure your co-worker wasn't actually messing with you when he said that? It's not a real indication that he's Muslim as far as I can tell.

So it chilled you to the bone that he WOULD NOT kill you? I don't get it. I thought that, if nothing else, he was just setting straight all the misinformed stereotypes that people like you, by your own admission, share.

*Facepalm*

He said not all muslims are radical terrorists. He says he wouldn't hurt you just for not believing and yet you still blurt the stupid "All muslims kill" shit.

You are a complete, utter moron.

He said that he won't kill you if you don't submit. In other words, he won't kill you! Is that really so hard for you to understand?

"I just froze up; I wasn't really sure what to say"

Oh, so that feeling white people get when a black guy asks them for directions?

This is why religious discussions should be left out of the workplace.

And anyone else find it ironic that a fundie is talking about their job at McDonald's?

"Well, I won't kill you" is clearly code for "I will kill you".
The Damn Muslims are using Fundie codes!

The last thing he said chilled you to the bone? He basically said he was tolerant of different views and not a murderer. OH BOY HOW SCARY! You've never spoken to somebody whose holy book tells them to kill? So you don't talk to other Christians?

Hope you enjoy working at that McDonalds.

Just FTR, I think what "chilled [him] to the bone" was not the guy's saying he wouldn't kill him, but the guy's saying, indirectly, that he was indeed Muslim. He was hoping there would be a breathless "Oh gosh, no, I'm Christian! I wouldn't want you to think I'm one of those camel-fuckers!"

Ever read the Qur'an? It has the same Ten Commandments as it does in the Bible, one of which is "Thou shalt not kill." Argument invalidated.

Try talking to the guy you see in the mirror.

Yeah, I know. It's scary when people don't conform to your prejudices, isn't it?

That's the stupidest thing I have ever read.

I am now triply glad that a sensible Christian leader has obtained those copies of the Q'uran Terry Jones was gonna burn and will be using them to actually teach others what's IN the thing.

Maybe that will cut down on this ignorance.

Your holy book kills people all the time because your god wants. so shut up....

As someone who was Muslim and has read the Qur'an cover to cover at least five times, I can assure you it does not say that.

The 'hunt them and kill them wherever you find them' line has been taken out of context again again. The whole line: 'When they persecute you and drive you out of your lands, hunt them and kill them wherever you find them.' Maybe not the most progressive way to go about things, but not something I can imagine any conservative Christian disagreeing with. It also clarifies later that women and children should not be killed, fields should not be salted, etc.

There's also a line early in Surah Baqarah that says that believing Jews and Christians will go to paradise.

So yea. Islam was still too intolerant for me, but mostly because of the sexism and homophobia - problems which plague Christianity to a much greater degree.

That's a few steps more humane than the Christian Bible, then, with its explicit exhortations to kill the children of one's enemies.

Yep, there's nothing scarier than someone assuring you they won't kill you. Wait, what?

Maybe you should try reading your own holy book for a change. You know, the one where your god orders you to kill every last one of your enemies, even children and pregnant women.

"I've never actually spoken to a person who's holy book tells him to kill me and everyone else that worships the true Living God."
You've never talked to a Christian? The Bible tells you to kill everyone who doesn't worship the God of Israel.

You believe in the same God, stupid, and he said he wouldn't kill you, stupid.
