Quote# 7639

If all slaves were treated appropiately and correctly... there would be no negative connotation applied to slaves or slavery. But, since many slaves were abused, killed, raped, maimed, etc., which was not in accordance with the bibles regulations, there has been a negative association applied to 'slavery' and 'slaves.'

I see, so slavery is perfectly acceptable as long as we don't mistreat them.

You're morally depraved!

So you're saying it'd be OK if they were paid, could return to their own homes and had 401K plans and health insurance annd so forth.

Julian: Well, that's how MY employers seem to have seen it. Usually.

I can picture this guy as a fat plantation owner in the South wearing a white suite and hat gazing over his slaves in his cotton field. You lost the Civil War, get over it.

Those abuses will ALWAYS happen when you have a master/slave relationship. Subjugation necessarily dehumanizes the slave in the master's eyes, because the slave's inherent lesser value is the only way to justify slavery. Once the slave is dehumanized, taboos about the way you are and are not supposed to treat other humans melt away.

I see, so who exactly qualifies as a slave then, you? Are you saying it’s ok if I make you my slave, as long as I treat you “right”? What a load of crap, do a little reading on what morality really is.

Being taken into slavery is mistreatment enough, never mind the \"negative associations\".

Standing on Not_Registered's throat has been misrepresented. I like to use pink bunny slippers because he had a problem with the stilettos last time. If more people knew this I think standing on Not-Registered's throat would be much more accepted, if not encouraged!

But therein lies the problem. The moment someone has ownership of another person, the dynamics of their relationship is skewed, so the owned becomes less of a person, and more of a possession.

That justification of slavery thing is a bit of a millstone around your TM Christian neck.
If being a slave is biblical - do it!

Alternatively - do what other Xians do - go for gays and abortion instead!

Yeah, that's how you fundies treat your wives, we know. Still you don't own them, assholes.

"If all slaves were treated appropiately and correctly... there would be no negative connotation applied to slaves or slavery."

Define "Appropiately(sic!)" and "correctly".
For extra credit, without using the Bible.

Where in the bible does it say that rape, maiming or abuse are prohibited?
Being owned by another person is the biggest negative "connotation" applied to slavery. Being told what to do, where to live, who to live with, and the posibility of being sold to another person whenever the owner feels like it, away from your spouse and children.

Asshole!

So do they have bible bureaucrats? Is there bible redtape?

"If all slaves were treated appropiately and correctly... there would be no negative connotation applied to slaves or slavery."

- The literal ownership of another human being, regardless of said person's wishes, could somehow be anything but reprehensible?

Besides, Abraham and Jacob both fathered children with their wives slaves at their wives' commands (the slaves' opinions of this arrangement are not recorded in the bible, since they were just slaves). If the patriarchs could not avoid abusing slaves, how could anyone?

10/8/2012 6:31:02 AM

The negative connotation is to own another human being, asshole.

Slaves were indeed often abused, killed, raped, maimed, but they were also sold off to another owner, without regards taken about their wives, husband, children and parents.
