Yes, the bible doesn't say there's anything wrong with slavery, and that's proof that the bible couldn't have been written by an omni-benevolent deity.

Under the laws of the land, yes, even in Biblical times, you cannot beat, order or demand from your neighbors. Just like today, you will be punished by the law. Just like the days of slavery in America.

You had to be affluent to own slaves in both cases also, therefore an influence on or the ruling class itself. Same as it always was.

Slavery, as described in the Bible is exactly the same as the slave trade of our recent history. Slaves are owned and mistreated at will, they had no rights then or now.
