No way. This can't be. Not a hyper-Christian Randroid. That's just too insane for words.
(BTW, my philosophy class *did* cover Rand, at least briefly. One of the other posters says it's a good thing they don't present Rand, as they'd butcher it. I'd say Rand does a pretty good job of butchering it herself.)

Um... does he know that Rand was not only an atheist, but thought that the truth of atheism was a fundamental, metaphysical issue ? There is no possible way to reconcile Christianity with Rand.

Some people just can't check their partisan bullshit at the door, even if it's the classroom door.

See, the problem with Rand is that her philosophies were inherently fundamentalist in their own right -- Randian Objectivism, essentially, is radical libertarianism combined with a cult of personality. I think the reason it's not taken too seriously in academia is that it's really rather simplistic and snotty, as well as rigidly inflexible in its principles.

What a wonderful little paradox you are.
On another note, I would never call my self an Objectivist/Randian, but I do like some of it.

Translation: It isn't right-wing fundie philo, so it must be left-wing commie crap.

Part of philosophy class is learning to listen to ideas you didn't already have in your head. Part of philosphy class--by which I mean the best part--is being made uncomfortable.

Hmmm, Jesus was a liberal Jew. Funny that fundies always forget that.

I wonder if the Randroids ever stop to notice that none of them ever have much of a grounding in philosophy. If they
do
, I wonder whether they just assume this is part of some giant left-wing conspiracy in philosophy departments. (Because really...philosophy is
not
a left-wing discipline, at least in the U.S. Hell, most of the specifically leftist philosophy-types were effectively banished to Comparative Literature departments...)

I never cared for Randroids and their screw-you-jack-I've-got-mine attitude.
There is a prof at FSU who is a rather strident Randroid; he used to spew objectivist rants in the local paper.

I myself am an Objectivist, and I am quite frankly glad that this person didn't study Rand's work. They obviously have no idea about Rand's life and ideas, and that Rand would probably not suffer a person like this.

Being uncomfortable, IMHO, means you're seriously challenging your previously held ideas. ALWAYS a good thing. *thumbs up.*

In the phil class I'm taking right now, we read some articles from Rand with no teacher commentary. It was the students who brought them up in class and bashed them. I fucking hated Rand, because she was a delusional, narrow-minded asshat. And no one had to tell me that.

That's because Ayn Rand was a writer of fiction.

First, I'll cross- post
these
links
someone shared with me in another thread, in which Christians delude themselves into believing Rand was a Christian fundie too. They manage to do a lot of
green ideas sleep furiously
in the process, something Rand herself also excelled at.
To address the OP: That's because real philosophy makes Randian Objectivism look like the ramblings of a semi-literate juvenile reactionary. Her "philosophy" is simple- minded, demonstrably untrue in parts and challenges the bible in its failure to attain internal consistency.
Ironically enough, this "Christian" probably rejected Kant, Descartes and Pascal out of hand, but bemoans the lack of time devoted to an ardent atheist. Plus, Rand stole more than a couple of thoughts and arguments from "left wing socialist whack jobs" like Marx and Nietzsche, but didn't suffer from their terrifying clarity of vision (I actually just wanted to quote that phrase; points to whoever gets it).

Ayn Rand's overlying principle:
The rich make all the rules, everyone else are servants.
The fundie churchs agree with that so they've embrassed it, filtered out the Atheist leanings as they filter out most the Bible. Make no mistake, Fundamentalist leaders want total control of the wealth, lands and people. They have no use for a democrated, free people America, they are right-wing overlords in their own minds.

Ayn Rand based the
hero
of one of her first novels on a guy who kidnapped 10 year-old and dismembered her. She was fucked in the head and so is anyone who listens to her.
