If your God is omnipotent why do you need to pray? Surely he is already aware of the problem? Is he like prayer-powered or something? Maybe they should hold a prayer-a-thon in order to raise enough prayers to save the victims. Or maybe he's just a jerk who won't help unless you beg him.

A couple of years ago I took our son to midnight mass (that's protestant high church mass, not catholic mass) on xmas eve. No, we're not xian - I was, nominally, as a youngster because that's the way things were back then, but I became an atheist after a) deciding that the cult is a crutch for those who don't have the gumption to take responsibility for their own lives and b) reading the babble. However, I wanted our son to see what it was all about...

The vicar (a woman) expressed just this sentiment in her sermon, saying that our prayers were worth far more to the suffering in Africa than any other help anyone might give.

I wanted to slap her, hard. My son (now 13) was also disgusted, and now wants nothing to do with any religion.

These people dig their own graves, don't they? It's almost as thought they don't want to persuade anyone to join them.
