The Classical Greeks had anesthesia, (or at least induced trances for surgical operations,) as well as better hygiene than most later cultures. The Egyptians before them also had a rudimentary, but workable understanding of surgery. After the rise of Christianity study into medicine was believed to be the work of witches and Satanists out to steal your soul with Voodoo. And if you believe your bible going to the doctor instead of praying for a miraculous recovery is a sign of your wavering faith and therefore a sin.

Are you implying they could have harnessed God's powers, or become gods themselves and healed people that way?
Anesthesia is for PAIN, it does not actually save the person's life - it simply makes the whole ordeal a lot less horrible to go through.

If the Bible had said "and lo, the Lord used a tincture of Kavah root to place Adam in a deep sleep, in which he felt no pain" that might have been helpful. as it is , not so much.
