The Return of Eye Beams!

Pew! Pew! Pew!

Quote# 77098

In a thread regarding astrophysics, distance and star light

Here is a question you.

So a light year = the distance light travels in a year.

You mentioned the figure 11 million light years away.

So my question is how are we observing this light 11 million light years away now?

I'm not 11 million years old, i'm 20.

---------------------------------------------

Later on he goes on to say...

If it takes 11 million years to travel to earth, how can i see it now? I'm only 20.

If it takes 11 million years to travel to earth then the viewer would need to be 11 million years old.

---------------------------------------------

And it continues with...

I don't believe light travels at all, i've looked at various models and worked on many but none of it works. The basics of visual perception is often overlooked. When we look at something what is actually going on? The emission theory states that the light emits (not a travelling speed) from our own eyes not from the object we look at. The intromission theory states the opposite.

The emission theory is the most common sense, so i don't believe there is any speed of light. The 'Starlight Problem' has never been a problem for me and the YEC model. The earliest Church Fathers (2nd-4th century AD) who believed in emmision theory also had no problem with starlight and a young universe.

Sorry. I don't accept that a normal human being can be so stupid at 20 - unless they happen to be infected with the dreaded 'Fundie' bug.

Doubting Thomas

I was just reading that thread and apparently he thinks that light travels instantaneously, which since it travels so fast seems to do when you for instance turn on the light switch and the light comes on. But for an object 11 million light years away, it's not hard to understand that the light from the stars that we see started out many thousands of years ago or longer.

Heck it even takes about a second or two for light to travel from the earth to the moon, and the moon is pretty darn close, astronomically speaking.

But I think the whole "light travels out of your eyes and lights up objects" idea has to be the most stupid thing I've ever read on the internet. But, he claims, "it hasn't been disproven!" The mantra of pseudoscience believers everywhere.

Ummmm... Cassiterides?
You are not the universe.
The universe did not form the moment you were born.

Eyebeams HAVE been disproven, and quite soundly.

Blind Obstacle courses. Your eyes open, the lights completely off

If eyes Emit some sort of vision beams, you will navigate these perfectly well despite the absence of light. If they do not, you will stumble and fall based on things you cannot see for lack of vision.

I also like to ask these people how they think cameras work.

Would we expect intelligent critical thinkers on anything to with science?

No..no we wouldn't.

I think my favorite part of his argument was "from what i remember when i studied science a while back i was told that light can not travel through a vaccum (as sound cant). Therefore i have no idea why people believe starlight travels through space," probably referring to one Bible-based science course he took in the course of his life.

This anti-evolution site that this is posted on apparently banned that guy, even they think he's an idiot.

The whole site could be made for FSTDT. From the Forum Guidelines:
“It is intellectually dishonest to claim that micro-evolution (something everyone agrees occurs) proves that all life originates from a common ancestor.”
You have to love this hypocritical nugget:
“The primary goal of this forum is to provide a place for honest, educational, civil, and fun debate on the topic of origins.”
“Since Evolution Fairytale is a Christian-based ministry, only Christians will be accepted as Moderators and Admins for the forum.”

Stack the chips as high as you can on your own side, and still lose the argument. This is very sad indeed.

Umm....so if that were the case, we'd only be able to see about 4 or 5 stars. 11 million light years means the star has to be that old, not the viewer.

Um...no. The light has been travelling 11 million years before you were born. Let me put it this way. Let's say you are walking down the road and suddenly you are hit by a 1968 Plymouth. You do not have to have been born in 1968 to be hit by it. Its age has nothing to do with you.
