Quote# 77471

They are laying a groundwork for persecuting Christians.

As a mentally ill individual who has battled suicide, I can assure you depression is 100% responsible for suicide. Not bullying.

I have been bullied this year, after refusing sexual advances. Am I sucidal? No. I dread going into work sometimes, I avoid him if at all possible, but I'm not killing myself over it.

The media is trying to build a foundation:
Christianity is hate speech (Bible verses protesting homosexuality);
"Hate speech" is bullying.
Bullying causes suicide (NOT TRUE).

Ergo, Christian beliefs, when expressed, lead to suicide. We have to restrict this!

I can see it VERY clearly. It's not about bullying at all; it's about taking away our rights to speak of Jesus and the Bible.

Mark my words on this.

BULL. CRAP. Here's a long list of cases of "bullycide." Bullying doesn't just lead to suicide. It leads to so many suicides that there's a special term just for those suicides.

And...bullying victims aren't depressed?

So what you are saying is that you want a license to bully and spit you hateful vitriol!

Do you even understand the irony of your very first sentence when you followed it with this shit!

There's a current case going on here about a 14 year-old girl who was allegedly raped, and then was harassed and taunted by her peers so much for being a "whore" that she killed herself before the case could go to trial, so the accused got off scott free.

Then again, the Bible does say that women who are raped are dirty whores who should be executed, so I suppose her peers really were doing their Christian duty.

To be fair, this fundie is actually being called out on this bullshit by some other people on RR. Well, as much as anyone is ever called out on bullshit there. Regardless, it still doesn't change the fact that this fundie is either very ignorant and/or a jackass.

I've been the victim of bullying before, and it very nearly drove me to suicide (fortunately, such things are no longer a problem, thanks to the help of some very wonderful people and the fact that the people I had to associate with generally got more mature as we all got older). While clinical depression on some level (as I daresay there are levels of this - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) may have contributed in my case and others, the overriding blame must be placed on the bullies. The attitude displayed by people like Acts5:41 just serves to make the problem worse.

Just once, I'd like on of these fundies to talk to immigrant Christians from places like Iraq so they can learn what actual persecution is. Of course, knowing them, they'll probably look at them straight faced and tell them that'll be us in the next year or so.

Okay, only the second paragraph makes sense here.

To think, that mess and faulty conclusion you came up with could all have been avoided if you had recognized the link between constant bullying and depression.

Thank god you made this point apparent. Now i don't have to take anything in your post seriously. As if i would've in any case... Just a load of, well, you know what.

I suspect this applies to most RR posters.

But bullying causes depression...

And what happened to that "abrogation of the law" that you fundies go on about? How come the anti-sodomy laws are the only laws out of the 613 that weren't "nailed to the cross", hmmm? You are hypocrites, the lot of you.

I guess I'll never understand why these people think that it's terrible for Christians to be persecuted, but they think it's perfectly OK for them to persecute others. Also interesting how whenever the issue of hate speech come up, they always go on the defensive.

It's not about bullying at all; it's about taking away our rights to speak of Jesus and the Bible.

Again, you can talk about Jesus and the bible until you're blue in the face. You can even be just like Fred Phelps if you need to, just don't expect anyone to give you any respect for your intolerance.

Indeed, there is a massive gulf, an unbridgeable chasm, in reality, a whole world of difference between Jesus Christ and Christianity and its cultists. One promotes gentility and humanism while the other promotes bigotry and Mammon worship. One promotes trust and order the other promotes deceit and rabid disturbance. One promotes tolerance and moderation the other promotes persecution and excess. One promotes equality regardless of sex and respect for children the other promotes misogyny and the sexual abuse of children. One promotes truth and clarity the other promotes lies and delusion. One promotes education and the struggle for freedom the other promotes stupidity and authoritarianism. There are many other differences that are so readily apparent between the two that I'd be all day listing them.

Rapture Ready has chosen the one of the two sides. Their spiritual component has long ago taken an express train to a deserted and rusting siding. Their mental coherence long ago scattered for points unknown. Their physical shells they hope will attain the power of flight ...soon.

> As a mentally ill individual who has battled suicide, I can assure you depression is 100% responsible for suicide. Not bullying.

And what, pray tell, causes depression? There are many reasons for depression, you know. (I even have been depressed due to bullying, and even worse when I realised how much of my life was wasted when I let the bullies have their way.)

> It's not about bullying at all; it's about taking away our rights to speak of Jesus and the Bible.

Ah, so you're saying that people really shouldn't be concerned about bullying. You are saying hate and intolerance, and certainly not Good Christian hate and intolerance, can cause bullying, but it's all okay because it cannot cause suicides?

I'm not exactly following this logic. You're far more concerned about direct effects (i.e. what directly causes the suicide) than the second-hand effects (what causes the thing that directly causes the suicide).

You're afraid because people can build a chain of cause and effect, starting from the Bible and ending with the suicides. You happen upon a dead body, take the damning chain elsewhere, and tie it to a lamp post outside, hoping no one will notice. Someone will.

Why not break the chain far earlier? Why can't you just climb up the vine and remove things at the top? Why are you not concerned about the hateful messages in the Bible? Why are you not concerned about the intolerance and hatred, and not the effects of the intolerance and hatred?

Bullying may lead to depression, stupid!

Spreading hatred for a particular group is per definition hate speech.
You are at liberty to say "I find gays icky". But, the moment you say "gays deserve death", it has crossed over from personal oppionion to hate speech.

Christian beliefs, such as "Love thy neighbor as your friend" or "That which you do to the least of my peope, you do unto me" are not hate speech and will not cause any depression. (Except perhaps in the person who likes to spew hatred...)

I can assure you depression is 100% responsible for suicide.

My grandfather had lung cancer due to smoking. He went through treatment and it cost him a lung, not to mention much pain and suffering. He was in remission for a couple years. When it came back in the other lung, he put a pistol in his mouth rather than go through the ordeal again. Up until this point, he'd been happy, healthy and full of life. Four years after initial diagnosis, he was gone.

Depression was not the root cause of his suicide.

Then get off your persecution complex and call the cops.

Thanks for your input, but I think many of us already made the connection between
ignorance and cruelty in the Bible,
sanctioned persecution,
depression and suicide.

In this case, the media is reflecting popular views, not creating them.

Your experience with bullying is NOT the normal. Nor does your experience with bullying "allow" you to dictate to others how they deal with it... The way you speak makes you sound like you're trying to be a god of sorts?!?!?!
