Critical Science Failure

Anyone else think Super Sport had a kid?

Quote# 77519

Gravity is a theory, not a proven fact.

The effects of gravity can be explained by other theories. An example would be the acceleration theory which asserts the earth is actually moving 'upward' at a constant rate of 1g (9.8m/sec^2). This produces the same effect as "gravity".

See there are different theories for the same phenomena - and none are facts, they are just theories.

i'm still not entirely convinced this ISN'T supersport...

"Gravity is a theory, not a proven fact."

Yes, gravity is a theory--one currently being tweaked. It is also a "proven fact." If you don't believe me, jump off the nearest cliff as an experiment.

Ok. So, what happens in Australia then? Unless you're proposing a flat Earth, which for your sake I hope you aren't.

"See there are different theories for the same phenomena - and none are facts, they are just theories."

What you have is not a theory. It's not even a hypothesis. I wouldn't even call it conjecture. It's ad hoc bullshit that doesn't align with observed reality, doesn't explain experimental data, makes no predictions and is easily proven to be fucking wrong. Now, please go learn what an actual theory does and why they are held in the high regard they are.

Are we sure this guy isn't a poe?

Can we at least pretend no one alive actually believes this? The thought makes my head hurt. :P

@Paler_Face

"Even if we consider a YEC perspective of a 6000 year old earth, if the earth was accelerating at 9.8m/sec^2 the earth would be traveling at about 6200 times the speed of light.
We would have left our solar system, galaxy and possibly, universe behind a long time ago if that was the case."

Methinks he's been watching a certain 1970s Gerry Anderson series too many times.

PROTIP: "Space: 1999" is not a documentary, Cassiterides.

Your 'accelerating earth' hypothesis isn't even compatible with your insane YEC beliefs.

Can anyone here calculate the current speed of the Earth (in its upwards direction) if it's been accelerating constantly @ 9.8m/s^2 for the last 4.5Bn years??? I would love to know!!!

For the sake of argument, let's say it started from 0m/s too...

A shade over 124 trillion meters per second.

As to the OP, way to conflate gravitic effects and the Theory of Gravity.

Test this theory by jumping off a cliff.

" An example would be the acceleration theory which asserts the earth is actually moving 'upward' at a constant rate of 1g (9.8m/sec^2). This produces the same effect as "gravity". "

Only if the entire surface of the earth was expanding at an accelleration of 9.8m/sec^2.
Calculate how big the earth would be if it were 6000 years old.

Unless you want to claim round earth is just a theory and it might be flat.

See fundie stupidness is a fact.

Yes, and the acceleration theory has been debunked, because it's part of FLAT EARTHISM. You would NEED A FLAT EARTH FOR IT TO WORK. However, because the EARTH IS ROUND, if gravity was explainable as you say it is, gravity would only equal that constant at one specific coordinate, and as you move around the Earth, gravity would cease to affect you, until on the other side you are clinging to the Earth for dear life.

{b]Yeah, assuming the earth is flat and ignoring all the solid evidence.

Let me design a gravity test experiment for you. Go to the Golden Gate bridge. Climb over the railing. Lean out and release your grip. Notice the bay rapidly getting closer?[/b]

"Gravity is a theory" is a phrase used to ridicule Creationists who use the same argument against evolution. Thus, I vote Poe.

If gravity is caused by the earth moving upwards rapidly, then why aren't the Australians falling off the earth or appear to be flying upwards from the ground? Or why doesn't gravity go sideways at the equator?

And if you say that a round earth is only a theory and not a fact, I'll bitchslap you,.

About 4700 million light years per second, ignoring relativity. If you don't ignore relativity, its effects would suggest that less than two months of acceleration would be needed before careful observation -- if there were anyone on the planet to make it -- determined that the acceleration was decreasing.
