@Shadow Phoenix:
"Honestly, it's a Catch-22. If we conserve while these idiots waste, our work will be seen as their God-given right to continue wasting. If we don't conserve, everyone loses. If these idiots get banished from conscientious society, we're no better than them and it gives them more hate-on fodder. "
I'd be happy if we took our chances with your third option above.

So although I would agree that lights out for an hour is not going to do anything to save our collective butts, helping spread awareness is a good thing.
Might I suggest you hold your breath for an hour, it'll save more than a polar bear.

The BEST way to protect the environment and save the Earth is to REDUCE THE HUMAN POPULATION. Not by wars, plagues, famines, etc, but by rational family planning. It is impossible for the Earth to accommodate an ever increasing population at an ever increasing standard of living. If we do not reduce the human population in a sane and gentle way, Mother Nature will do it HER WAY.

On the whole Earth Minute thing: God, they certainly make it easy for us to crack jokes on their expense, right?

>>Unbeliever:
Not quite :)
The real problem is precisely that - that they are load balanced. Turning the consumption of power off and then on creates a massive load on the system. The more load - the faster the components of the power grid are to be replaced (leading to increased carbon footprint in form of power switches, wires and so on). The environmental usefulness of this activity (at least on an hour scale) is questionable at best. <<
I don't think that there would be enough of a surge from Earth Hour to cause much wear on the grid as compared to normal fluctuations.
But you're quite right: an hour is only a symbolic gesture.

God made the Earth, and then the humans so they can metaphorically beat the living daylights out of it.

Ok, when you have nowhere to live or no lights to put out because you destroy the whole system, don't start crying.

"What could be more symbolic of the willful decline of civilization that this?"
How about, idiotic D-baggers on the Internet advocating wasting energy in order to spite their supposed enemies?

"In the original "Earth Hour" in Sydney, 2.2 million people supposedly turned out the lights in homage to the Earth Goddess. "
Show me proof it was done for an "earth goddess" or you just made that up to be hateful.
And liberals long for darkness? Citation needed or you are merely demonizing.

Is there anything these people won't get these people bent out of shape?
They won't even turn out extra lights to save a few kilowatt hours. They would rather intentionally waste as much energy as they can just to stick it to those dirty environmentalist hippie commies.
*BTW* I'm sure I've heard this whole "Earth Goddess" thing once before, from other fundtards, which means that it's just the same copy/paste crap that morons use to discredit those with whom they disagree.

As I recall, last time there was an 'Earth hour' various rapturite nutters were claiming they were going to switch all their un-needed lights on.

So Van, seeing how you worship the light, and shun the dark......do you sleep at night with all the lights on? I mean, if dark is so bad, turn on all the lights. From what you are saying, if an xain turns out lights to sleep, he is hypocritial.

I have to admit, what it is about saving energy, and generally treating the environment with care, that winds these assholes up like this is beyond me.
What is their problem?

Actually in the Bible Lucifer is the "Bringer of Light", therefore if Van Helsing loves the light and abhors darkness...well, you get what I'm saying.

You should probably burn some old tires in your back yard, just to offset the Earth Day people. Maybe you should bring in some barrels of used motor oil and set them on fire, too.
I'm sure your neighbors will love you for it.

You know what's weird? When you guys actually do crazed stuff that hurts people for an ideal, you don't care.
But when you make up fictional harms done by liberal thinking you devised by yourself, that's gospel.
