Marriage is the foundation of the nuclear family, which in turn is the foundation of the country.
On the contrary; the USA, like most pre-industrial societies, was founded on the extended family.

Yeah, 'cause everyone knows that this country was founded in the 1950's, or better yet, in what television tells us the 1950's were. Also, we fought the Revolution because we didn't approve of King George III's stance on the nuclear family. I read it all in a Texas-approved history book.

Yeah, they'll add 900 billion to the deficit so their billionaire buddies can have another billion and throw them a few million in pocket change. Um, wait . . .

By "thethirddegree" I assume you mean you're in 3rd grade. You're pretty slow, but I guess you COULD have made it to 3rd grade.

I can just see the Democratic Party strategists sitting around plotting:
Simplicio: "Let's see: If we let gays marry each other they won't marry people of the opposite sex, and we'll have less "nuclear" families whose children might vote for Republicans. Waddaya think? Can we pick up another 1%-2% in 2036 like that?
Sagredo: Gee, I dunno. Won't that let the Muslims take power and beat and torture us for our immorality?
Salviati: Hold it ... if gays aren't allowed to marry, won't they still not marry people of the opposite sex?
Simplicio: "Yeah, but if gays are getting married, people will say 'hey, what's the point of marrying?' and they'll start creating broken families, too! Then when their kids are 21 by the 2036 election, we'll have another 1%-2%"
Salviati: But the highest divorce rates today are in the Bible Belt, among conservative fundamentalists. Maybe busting up families will work against us.
Sagredo: The whole thing sounds dumb, like something the paranoid lunatics on FreeReublic would come up with - I think we need to work this out a little more.

Yes, the fraction of a percent of Muslims are totally going to take over America -- you know, that country with the world's baddest-ass military (or at least the most expensive).*
If that were to transpire obviously Americans are the biggest bunch of pussies ever.
* Personally I'm much more worried about the 70 percent of christianists imposing their special brand of theocracy.

I like the name Demonic Rats, has a nice ring to it, serves no other purpose but for passing judgment on someone however.
The Muslims will take power... why are they so afraid, aren't Muslims just Judaism service pack 3?

Theocratic societies have a tendency to end badly. It's wise to avoid them. However, our friend from Freeperville seems to be unaware of the fact that the only people making a concerted effort at turning the U.S. into a theocracy are Christian fundies.

Wow, good argument. The utterly unanswerable logic of making up a silly name for your opponent is devastating.
Of course, if someone were to think of calling your side rape-uglicans or conned-servitors, that would like totally throw it back in your face and you'd be equally helpless before their oratorical onslaught.

Hang on, even if this was all true and not crazy rantings, why would this be the sort of thing you'd put "Fear not my friend" at the beginning of? That sounds like the sort of thing even the freepers should be wary of. I mean, is this only a good thing because if it did happen, they could point and laugh and say I told you so?

I could never vote for a party that is supported by this kind of idiocy.
It looks like the Republicans really have sold their soul to the fundies and the loonies.
If only the Democrats had the wits to use this sort of thing in their electioneering, they might have a better chance in the polls - assuming most of America is sane.

I'm from a different continent and even I know that the USA was not founded on the nuclear family: that idea didn't become terribly significant until after the 2nd world war. The rest is just pots saying the kettles are all oxidized.

For fuck's sakes, we're not forcing straight people to gay marry, we're simply allowing people who are already gay couples to marry. If anything this adds MORE families not less. And if the mere existence of gay married couples destroys marriage in your eyes then that's your personal problem. However, most sane people love their marriage because they love their spouse not because they have something to hold over gay people's heads.
@shadkat
I mean, is this only a good thing because if it did happen, they could point and laugh and say I told you so?
I wouldn't put that kind of pettiness past them.

Demonic rats? Who wrote this, Sarah Palin?
And I just love the Islamaphobia. In the 1950's, the evil enemy from within were communists. Now, it's Muslims. But I think you're going to have to work a lot harder on your "If we let gays get married then the Muslims are going to take over!!1!" scare tactic.
Funny how conservatives always have to have a boogeyman to believe in to scare each other straight. Which is probably why they believe in the devil so much.
