In fact, her use of the term is perfect, in that she and the Tea Party movement are accused by Democrats and liberal media of being responsible for any acts of violence on elected officials. Yes, well, when you have a party of nuts all saying the same fucking thing in various ways and that thing is that government officials should be "removed" or "taken out" it's pretty obvious to everyone--save you, apparently--what they're talking about. They only make it a veiled statement to stay off terrorist watch lists and avoid visits from the FBI and Homeland Security.

What is absurd is 1: that she would equate the two and, 2: that you would agree with her.

Calling someone stupid is not violence. Calling for elected officials to be "removed" from office in such a way that it's pretty obvious that you're doing everything but providing the gun and ammunition is something else entirely.

Okay Joe, I'll bite.

- I do not "hate" Ms. Palin or wish her dead. However, I see no redeeming feature in her rhetoric or her political aspirations. Furthermore, I think that a lot of her positions stem from gross ignorance and self-righteousness. To base public policy on ignorance and self-righteousness is, I believe, stupid. The invasion of Iraq stands as exhibit "A" on that matter.

- Hating Ms. Palin is "trendy?" Mister, where the hell have you been? Ms. Palin and her family are splashed all over he media! They are celebrities, there is no denying that! All celebrities get slammed, it comes with the job description. The only difference is that most of them don't whine about it the way she does.

If Palin were at all serious about being a politician (either for her own benefit or for that of others), she would not have resigned as governor of Alaska. If, instead, she is motivated primarily by a desire for fame and money, then her actions and statements follow a predictable pattern. She cannot hold political office, because of limitations like salary caps and anti-corruption legislation. And she must continue to do and say outrageous things, independent of reality or of what she actually believes. I find this all rather boring, actually.

So I personally have been avoiding knowing what she is saying, in the hope that she will eventually fade from the public eye.

I dislike her political views, but I don't hate her. I leave the hate to conservative Christians.

And I personally think that Sarah Palin has been nothing more than a media whore ever since the 2008 election. Of course that applies to just about anyone with a reality show (which she apparently had to fly back to Alaska to participate in, since she's been working for Fox News since quitting the governor job), but the way she keeps trying to manufacture controversy (i.e. "We're making s'mores in honor of Michelle Obama who says we shouldn't eat dessert.") to keep herself in the limelight. And she and other conservatives have been awfully defensive after the Tucson shooting.

Saying she's a simpleton might be going too far but she's definitely far too ignorant to be a president. She can't even name a single Supreme Court decision besides Roe v. Wade or a single magazine/newspaper that she reads.

If she didn't that would be the end of her political career. She's insanely ignorant and possibly stupid too but she's not completely retarded.

The answer to all of those is no. I think she's way too ignorant too be a president. Her answers remind me of when I was interviewing for a senior level developer position that was way over my head and I had to bullshit a lot of my answers. They didn't hire me and I agree with that decision because you don't want somebody who doesn't know what they're doing possibly destroying code. That concern gets cranked up to 11 when you're putting somebody in charge of the entire country and she doesn't have a clue how the federal government works. Of course, neither do her followers which is why she can get away with being that shockingly ignorant.

No, though I do dislike her. Hatred is passionate, and it's too easy for such strong emotions to overwhelm objectivity. I try not to hate anyone.

No. Her death would do nothing except provoke wild conspiracy theories from the paranoid right-wing. I suspect any mishap would only deepen the divide between the two parties as false accusations and distrust abound. Even if that wasn't the case, no one should be killed for being willfully ignorant.

I call her stupid because she talks about subjects she clearly knows nothings about. Among other things, she said that she would cut spending to projects that don't help the public good...and then cited fruitfly research as an example, looking amazed that scientists are currently working on something so "useless." She spoke of death panels, and of Israel's right to expand settlements because "more Jewish people will be flocking to Israel in the days and weeks and months ahead," which suggests to me that she thinks Christ's second coming is right around the corner. The press had nothing to do with it; her lack of intellect couldn't be more obvious if she scrawled "Moron" on her forehead with Magic Marker.

I do not hate Palin for her political views (though I strongly disagree with them). I do not wish her death. I do not "pile-on" with others when it comes to her (nor do I know what that means). I do not call her stupid because the press does. I call her stupid because, when she was McCain's running mate, she did not understand the main doctrines of her own political party, she thought that the fact that she lived in a state where one can see Russia made her qualified to speak on matters of foreign policy, and she has shown no signs of educating herself since then. Will the far right stop its violent rhetoric? If not, then we are perfectly justified in considering them at least partially complicit in the tragedy, since they show no remorse or any sign of changing their ways. Loughner, despite being left-wing, was pushed over the edge because of the polarized American political rhetoric, terrified that if he didn't do something, the conservatives would do something drastic. I am not defending him; I despise him because he resorted to violence and killed innocents. This polarized situation has to stop before something even worse happens.

The thing you fail to realize about free speech. I will defend your right to say what you will. However, you must be prepared to face the consequences of your words. You make a map of the U.S. and put crosshairs over a number of politicians' ridings, and then one of them gets attacked, you better believe that people will be looking into the message you tried to send. Free speech does not mean you remain unaccountable for your actions.

Personally, I acknowledge that the jump to Tea Partiers being responsible for the attack on Congresswoman Giffords was premature. HOWEVER, when the attack is made on a Democrat, with the aforementioned image posted on a Tea Party site...you must agree that such a belief isn't exactly unfounded.

Oh look, someone looked up Blood Libel on Wikipedia. No, not equally absurd. One is hateful rhetoric, spouted to inspire hatred and distrust against a religion. The other is simply looking at what you guys have been saying, analyzing your actions, and again, looking at a picture YOU guys slung around your internet space, and thought that violence isn't a far cry, and far from baseless.

I'm sure that there are left-wing fanatics, but Palin immediately after removed the infamous crosshair image before anybody said anything about it. I doubt that she intended violence but it seems she feels either guilty about it or is doing a PR spinning to try to salvage and not loose political power (or most likely both.)

No. Because liberals aren't as scared of opponents and of being wrong as conservatives are.

Whether or not Mrs. Palin and the Tea Party scaremongering directly or indirectly inspired this guy, or if he even knew of their existence at all, is completely irrelevant. All we need to know is that this kid thought that the government was a threat, and so he took up arms. It doesn't matter how reality-based such thinking was or how reliable his information was. The Tea Party certainly never cared about such details. But they have said many times that such violence under such perceived circumstances is justified. Therefore, we have every right to link them to the blood-soaked reality of their own rhetoric.

Both parties, Tweedledum and Tweedle-even-dumber and their representatives want to avoid violence, for fear it will rebound on them.
James lee, the Discovery Channel shooter, and Jared Loughner the Tucson shooter were both crazies as demonstrated by the writings they left behind.
There is no belief so absolutely true and right that somewhere there won't be a lunatic who supports it, and is willing to kill for it. Both sides tend to regard the crazies as 'not us', and quite rightly because for the vast majority of the membership and the self interest of the organisation, it really isn't them.
I may be misjudging, but my personal estimate is that the voluntary human extinction crazies slightly outnumber the violent right wing crazies. Of course, the 'darnedest thing' immediately after this one provides evidence for the contrary view.
The rise of violence in your political discourse is far less a matter of ideologies than it is a response to your economic malaise. It's TRADITIONAL to kill the king if the harvest fails, and this impulse remains in every society however much we might imagine ourselves advanced since then.

The point is that neither party is pot nor kettle; its an illusion fostered by the fact that you each include the crazies on the other side when you look at your opponents, while excluding those on your own.

I missed something here, because I try not to watch things that will make me sad so I don't watch the news very often. I missed the speech and the report on the actual attack, but I did hear part of some coverage on the attack on the radio and then discussed it with some family and friends. I don't know all the details so I'll just move on to the questions about Sarah P.

Answers to questions in the order asked:

No, I do not hate Sarah. I strongly dislike her for both her politics and her actions, but I try to avoid hating anyone as it is kind of bad for me psychologically.

No, I do not wish her death. I try, again, not to wish death on others because THIS IS NOT A SIGN OF GOOD MENTAL HEALTH and I try to avoid becoming more ill than I am. If I ever do find myself wishing death on others I intend to seek immediate psychiatric help.

What? I'm not sure what that means, but uhm...I'm not a trend-following person largely because I just don't pay that much attention to pop-culture. A bad thing or a fashion major, I know, but you know what? I am weird. So no, my dislike of Sarah is not based on what others think of her. It is based on her personality, beliefs, and behavior.

I try not to call people names. I don't think Sarah's very bright, and she does and says a lot of very unintelligent things. But I try not to call people names.

Uhm, I don't know, not me. I'm very much opposed to non-fictional violence of any sort, I find it extremely unappealing and kind of horrifying. Which is funny because I'm totally into campy horror movies.

We in Canada had a no-confidence vote years ago, a re-election forced on the public for a gang-up of percieved incompetance. The other side won the re-election and immediately proceeded to do exactly what the oppossing party was supposedly voted out for. So I know dishonesty, deceit and stupidity can win in the best systems.

The hate of Palin in America has a parallel with this story. Some Americas are ashamed and know that stupidity has won before, and there's an outside chance this ridiculously self-centered, uneducated, theocracy desiring idiot can achieve high office by appealing to the pre-brainwashed masses.

Defending her MANY instances of stupidity only proves this. It also shows a Republican agenda of wanting another puppet as president
