Quote# 78860

[RR delves into irony while discussing astrology]

My thoughts, too, Nightelf, although I DO know what my sign is (Leo).... I'm certain there are many, many people who live each day of their lives based on their sign--their "daily horoscope." So sad....

I live each day of my life based on a two-thousand year old book instead! Much more practical.

Yes, it was posted on Rapture Ready, and yes, Little Bug probably is completely insane.

But this quote, in and of itself, isn't fundie in the slightest. It's something that wouldn't look out of place around here; in fact I might say something very similar, and nobody would think twice about it.

Just because its posted in a hive of stupididy, by someone very likely very stupid, doesn't automatically make it a "darndest thing", even if a fundie said it.

The fundieness is in the doublethink. If I expressed a belief in astrology, my theist family members would never let me live it down.

Translation: Our superstitions are real while everyone else's are false.

Protip: Many devout Christians are also horoscope devotees. It seems that the more religious someone is, the more superstitious they tend to be.

As opposed to trudging around, living your life in accordance to an apocalypse "prophecy?" Which is sadder, living based on your horoscope, or living, forgoing all happiness, because it's all just a distraction from God, and the Rapture. Which is gonna happen, any day now. Any day.

Mister Spak

I.m certain there are many many people on Rapture Retards who live each day of their lives in fear they will be left behind. So sad.

1/18/2011 7:09:35 AM

TGRwulf

So because they don't use the same superstion you do, it's sad?

Oh wait, Rapture Ready. Nevermind.

Theists are often perfectly rational people. It's just they've had it drilled into them never to question their faith. It was the same way for me. I was deathly afraid to hold my beliefs up to scrutiny the way I would other claims, but the moment I did, that Mighty Fortress collapsed like a house of cards.

Astrology was invented in the Middle East about the same time as the Bible was being written in the same place. Strange that one load of rubbish should be considered acceptable and the other not.

Nothing particularly fundie about this. If taken out of context, it is quite a reasonable statement. After all, I know what my sign is, and am well aware that astrology is bullshit. Just because something comes from a fundie website does not automatically make it fundie by association.

1/18/2011 7:26:23 AM

DevilsChaplain

Er, so what? I don't buy into astrology either, so how is that "fundie"?

I find fundie christians praying for end times much sadder. BTW its ironic statement, that is why soemone posted it im sure.

I was a test-tube baby. Thus I was born under the sign of Pyrex.

(j/k) ;)

But what completely fucks up Astrology as we know it? (and thus proves those who practice such are nothing more than charlatans) The fact there's a 13th sign (but there's only 12 months in the year). Ironically called Ophiucus.

The Bible is a firm advocate of astrology. So I guess they're both baloney.

"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:" Gen. 1:14

"Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them." Jer. 10:2

"He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions." Dan. 6:27

"And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars" Luke 21:25

@Brianisha

No doubt that's why it's here, but I feel a fundie quote shouldn't hinge on people knowing the reputation of the source, but rather from the quote itself. This person on RR could have easily said, "9/11 conspiracies are bullshit!" Yes Little Bug still believes in crazy, improbable things, but s/he's not wrong in that statement.

Yes. Everyone knows (deep down) that reading vegetarian imitation chicken entrails is the way to go.

Jezebel's Evil Sister

How the heck did this get quoted here? Is it only because it came from Ruptured Retards?

If it had appeared on another (non-fundie) website, it would be taken as a rational statement. A lot of us probably know our "sign" while putting no stock at all in astrology. (I'm a Pisces who never reads horoscope columns.)

Just because it came from a fundie site doesn't make it a fundie statement. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

@Jezebel's Evil Sister

Precisely!

1/18/2011 9:20:35 AM

The quote on its own doesn't appear very fundie.

Mind you, wouldn't most RR-ers think that actually knowing your own star sign would lead to demonic possession?

Ehhh. I've seen far worse material that didn't make to front page.

Are you a Leo? Or perhaps you fall under the influence of one of the other eleven zodiacal signs? Whatever. By availing myself of ancient astrological devices and by the use of certain other arcane means, I part the magic curtains of destiny and peek into the nebulous dimensions of otherness. There I can see that a sprawling, vaporous and invisible entity has come into your life. Further, I foresee a future of forlorn hope and unfulfilled dreams of being able to fly, which will continue unabated unto your death bed.

Horrendous visions of angry frustration and ignoble strife as the voice in your head manipulates you like a ventriloquist's dummy. A wasted life filled with deception and delusion awaits you as though you were but a gullible vessel to be guided by the madness of evil doers. All that you do, think and say will be for the furtherance of nothing more than a mind-phantom. The delirium has already begun and there is to be no escape from the clutches of the superstitious morass that drags you into its clogging depths.

Now the curtains close, and I can see no more. I am sorry to have been the one that tells of this bleak future filled with hatred and stupidity.

..yet you dont see that religion and astrology have MANY things in common?

1/18/2011 10:27:08 AM

I'm convinced that fundies have absolutely no sense of irony or hypocrisy at all. It's why you can go to a mega church and hear them preach:

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

without it so much as raising a single eyebrow.
