No the Romans didn't. It more or less went; "Shit that's one big fucking fire...no I wasn't playing my fiddle! Shit shit shit! Who can we blame?"
You know kind of like what you christards use gays and muslims for.
2/4/2011 4:51:41 AM
2011 - Admins on internet forums are lenient on people who make posts about killing people in cold blood
You mean like postings in various christian forums about killing the POTUS (you know, the "muslim" :D )?
2/4/2011 4:53:48 AM
The steps leading up to Christians being eaten by lions in the Roman Empire include a tradition of organized bloodsport dating back for centuries before Christianity.
Step 4 is especially rich. Does he expect a token presence of Christians in congress in 3 years after two centuries of being an overwhelming majority?
2/4/2011 4:55:35 AM
Oh please, please, please, I'll even help hold them down to make it easier for the lions :D

Percy Q. Shunn
I fail to see a down-side to any of your examples startng with 2013.
2/4/2011 5:11:24 AM
Quite the persecution complex, but considering US laws and history, no sane people are going to stand for genocide and extremist hate groups.
2/4/2011 5:13:08 AM
'2011 - Admins on internet forums are lenient on people who make posts about killing people in cold blood
2013 - Anti-Christian hate groups start killing Christians and largely get away with it'
No matter how you try it, equating those mean boys who made fun of you on the interwebs with murderers still makes you look like a whiny bitch
And just for the record, there was a long tradition of Gladiatorial blood sport in Rome before Christianity even existed, the Christians were just one of many groups deemed good for feeding
2/4/2011 5:14:06 AM
The slippery slope fallacy. A fictional and very implausible scenario. Christians are in no way persecuted in the United States and no-one is going to start feeding them to lions. Don't be silly.
2/4/2011 5:15:00 AM
Okay, I've stopped and thought. Can I laugh now? Because I want to. Hysterically.
2/4/2011 5:16:34 AM
THE SLIPPERY SLOPE
You've even identified the fallacy that you've committed (well, one of them, anyway).
[Fictional but somewhat plausible scenario]
"Fictional and total bullshit scenario" would be more like it.
2/4/2011 5:17:41 AM
> did the Romans just wake up one day all of a sudden and say "Hey, let's start feeding Christians to lions!" No. There were most certainly steps leading up to it.
Why, most certainly yes.
"The citizens want more bloodsports! Plain ol' gladiator games just aren't fun any more and importing crocodiles is bloody expensive! What do we do? Hmm, there's yet another crazy little sect that doesn't worship the Emperor as a god. Let's feed them to the lions! Fun for the whole family!"
2/4/2011 5:26:11 AM
The weather forecast didn't say anything about a slippery slope of non sequiturs during my morning commute.
The jump from 2012 to 2013 is priceless.

My reaction to this timeline:
2011 - Ok.
2012 - Eh?
2013 - lol
2014 - Ok, you're seriously delusional.
2015 - What.
I also find it so lolarious that this was posted at "Talk Rational".

Raised By Horses
My, that is one slippery slope you've got there.
So, in five years we're going to move from Jesus Camp Nation to Christians getting fed to lions? Yeah, and maybe Britney Spears will finally jump-start that career as an orchestral composer, like she always wanted to.
2/4/2011 5:50:09 AM
1980-2011 - Admins on internet forums are lenient on people who make posts about killing people in cold blood. Government agencies couldn't care less.
2012 - Stupid, unenforcable, unenforced laws against Internet tough guys are struck down.
2013-2015 - RAMPANT CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION!!1!
2/4/2011 5:53:45 AM
Wasn't that a myth - the Christians being 'fed' to the lions thing?
2/4/2011 5:56:27 AM
Yeeeaah, that very large gap between 2012 and 2013....
Before you laugh, stop and think ... did the Romans just wake up one day all of a sudden and say "Hey, let's start feeding Christians to lions!
Of course not. It was probably when you guys started eating their children.
2/4/2011 5:59:29 AM
The web site is called "Talk Rational" and you just violated that.

Firstly, it's Christians that are gloryfying violence. WBC revels in the deaths of fellow Americans performing duties in the armed forces of that country. They also vrbally try to terrorize gays, and in subscribing to the Bible would have no probalem with gays being killed a la Leviticus.
It was Christians that were responsible for the death of a young man whom the physically abused and left tied to a fence to freeze to death overnight.
So if Christians don't like the idea of being persecuted, perhaps they shouldn't engage in it themselves.
Also dave knows very little about Rome. The death games started probably with the Etruscans - pre Rome as a dominant political power. The exposing of prisoners (including a few Christians) was never the main purpose of the amphitheatre. It was usually done during the lunch break. Rather the Romans enjoyed the gladiatorial contests and, much like horse-racing of today, they betted on the outcome of fights. They particularly chariot racing (see Ben Hur!). Chariot racing was held in an elongated track such as the Circus Maximus in Rome - the course is still an open place and can be used as a pleasant place to take a stroll. But feeding people to animals wasn't really all that successful. The noise of the crowd quite often terrified the beasts and they simply ran back into their lairs under the arena.
Get an education.

aww you poor mistreated people
suck jesus' cock

sounds great to me!

Well, I want society in 20 years to be at the point where we act more rationally, much less irrationally. To massacre christians is an abhorrent thought, and I strongly hope that this will never ever happen (and it will most probably NOT happen). Doing so would be completely against the principles of secular humanism.
I rather hope that society will gradually simply lose interest in religious fairy-tales. That people just turn away from organized religion, become disinterested in it. That religion will be viewed with a notion of nostalgic amusement some day, and a feeling "Good that we got over this nonsense."
Exactly this you can observe in Europe's younger generation now. In the old christian strongholds of Spain, Italy, even Poland, the churches are losing their members. In droves. In 20 years, mainly only the very old people in Europe will be religious. Religion is not actively suppressed here. It simply dies out, because its time is over.
And thats a good thing.
2/4/2011 6:27:24 AM
Wait, wait, wait... I thought the name of that site was "Talk Rational?"
And how do you get from an 80% majority of the country being Christian, with Christianity ingrained into every aspect of our society, to persecuting and killing Christians in just a few years?
2/4/2011 6:32:21 AM
"2015 - Football stadiums accross the nation add a new event to generate more revenue - Lions Eating Christians"
Can we start this sooner?
"Before you laugh, stop and think ... did the Romans just wake up one day all of a sudden and say "Hey, let's start feeding Christians to lions!"
No, first they realised that christianity was a threat to the survival of Rome. Obviously they didn't feed enough lions, because Christianity destroyed Rome as soon as Constantine made it the official state religion.
"Where do you want society to be in 20 years?"
I want us to be exporting all our religious extremists to a place run by different religious extremists, where they will learn why we have separation of church and state.
