Where in the fuck do you find liberals embracing Shariah?!
I consider myself a liberal and I abhor and oppose any and all attempts to make religious rules the law of the land. That includes Hebrew, Christian, Islamic, Hindu, etc. rules.
For the record, an attempt was made several years ago to legislate the tamer elements of Shariah law into the Ontario legal code. Not only was this shot down but provisions already in place allowing Orthodox Jews to have religious courts carry the same weight as secular courts were also eliminated.
The government at the time was the provincial Liberal party.

I think somewhere along the lines, politicians realized that it was easier to mobilize their bases by demonizing the competition. One generous application of “Repeat a lie enough times, and anyone will believe it,” and you got one lie that will stick around forever. Unfortunately, the base will settle down anyway, so the politicians needed to repeat that with a new round of different demonization tactics. So you have a new lie growing out of an old lie, and both being accepted as truth. Then wash, rinse, and repeat.
It also doesn’t help that the average American isn’t very good at subtle distinctions. The US is a land of Black and White.
Disclaimer: I myself am an American living in what, until recently, was one of the saner places of the US. It’s not so much anymore.
