[A California bill would require the teaching of LGBT history in public schools.]
Please be advised that I'm 100% in favor of teaching homosexual history (I refuse to use the term "gay" for this abomination).
Here's the history lesson to be taught:
SODOM AND GOMORRAH

What about the Church's history? Let's not forget the Crusades, their ignoring/approval of Nazi Germany, the little side trip some did called the (Unexpected) Spanish Inquisition, the KKK...if you want to talk about abominations, we can.
Again a fundie who hasn't read his bible. Is there any fundie, btw, who has ever read his "holy" book? It doesn't seem so.
Interestingly, the book of genesis doesn't say exactly what the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was.
But it is said quite clearly in Ezekiel:
Ezekiel 16:49: Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
Pride, wealth, laziness, and ignoring the needs of the poor.
Indolence, uncharitability and gluttony were the sins of Sodom, IIRC. The only 'righteous' man in the city later performed incest with his daughters while dead drunk and knocked them up. While all that is interesting, I don't see what it has to do with LGBT history.
Question: How do we know that Free Republicans don't really believe in God and the Bible, considering them both to be works of fiction and sources of convenient justification for their abhorrent attitudes?
Answer: By reading quotes like that of people like re_nortex. Who is obviously someone who doesn't believe in hell either.
Question: How do we know that God and the Bible are firm favourites of the mentally unwell and are like sweet, sweet music to the ears of the insane?
Answer: See the quite deliberate madness and asinine idiocy perpetrated on sites like Free Republic. It could only be the work of dribbling monkeys or severely disturbed individuals. Very, very Godlike and Biblical indeed.
The Bible isn't a history book and unless you can prove that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by a god using objective evidence (which means that "because the Bible says so" is immediately out) you might as well be teaching The Odyssey as a history book and warning students about offending the ancient Greek gods. And even if we DID teach the Bible as history, as others have mentioned, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because the population there was full of mean and nasty people who lacked any semblance of kindness or hospitality (kind of like modern conservative fundies) not because everyone but Lot and his daughters was gay.
I hope you're planning on teaching that such places never really existed and the story was just another biblical myth. You'd think that archaeologists would have been able to find the remains of two cities destroyed by fire from the sky.
Oh and while you're at it, I would love to hear your explanation as to why two men or two women having consensual sex with each other is far worse than having your two daughters gang-raped by a crowd.
I think it might be a good thing to teach about Sodom and Gomorrah. Why... it'll teach people to be charitable, hospitable, and hard-working - all very good qualities.
What does this have to do with gay people?

Here's the history lesson to be taught:
SODOM AND GOMORRAH"

...oh, and not forgetting the Old Testament: 1 Samuel 18:3-4 and 2 Samuel 1:26. David and Jonathan ring any bells? To say nothing of the one responsible for that KJV you fundies drool over so much, hmmmmmm?!:

Oh, no hypocrisy there, nosiree! [/sarcasm]
Ever hear of the old saying 'Be careful what you wish for...'?!

"To quote Mike of the Young Ones, "I don't mean to suggest that your jokes are predictable, but there are as-yet undiscovered tribes in the Amazon basin who knew you were going to say that."

Fundie Beliefs #12: - Sodom and Gomorrah
Noah's Flood apparently didn’t work to eliminate sin, because years later, there were these two cities, Sodom and Gomorrah, which were stuffed to the brim with homos. God decided to do away with the cities, so he sent some angels to warn the city’s only straight guy, Lot. The angels stopped at his house, but as soon as the townspeople heard there was some fresh young men in town, they gathered round to have sex with them(1). But Lot wouldn’t let them. Being a good and righteous man in the eyes of God, he said "No. Gang-rape my virgin daughters!" But since the townspeople were a bunch of limp-wrists, they said "Yuck! They’re girls !" So the angels turned them blind(2) and they went away. God decided to destroy the cities by raining fire and brimstone(3), because God Hates Fags(4). The angels told Lot and his family they could leave first, but they couldn’t look back. Mrs. Lot did, though, and got turned into a pillar of salt(5).
Footnotes:
(1) The Bible never actually says that the angels were male or even had a gender at all. But they must have been male; otherwise, why would God have punished the people in Sodom and Gomorrah?
(2) There’s no medical evidence that blindness "cures" homosexuality. Otherwise, all gays would have to do to turn straight is masturbate until they go blind. It’s not clear why the angels didn’t just turn them blind to begin with instead of waiting until after the townsmen turned down the gang-rape of the daughters.
(3) He decided the Flood thing was too messy, and besides He had promised not to do that again; so He had to devise other ways of killing people.

(5) The Bible says nothing further about Mrs. Lot. The story about them continuing to use her on their French fries is just a sick joke.
Read your bible, asshat. It says why the cities were destroyed, much for the same problem we have now, they didn't take care of their poor.

Sodom and Gomorrah's sin was cruelty towards the poor, and inhospitality towards strangers.
@Anon-e-moose : you win an internet, good sir. Use it in good health.
Unfortunately the study of history requires that any claimed event has validation from at least one reputable source...
If you can't follow where this line of reasoning is going (which I doubt) then I'll spell it out for you in caps:
THE BIBLE IS 90+ PERCENT LIES, SO IT IS NOT A REPUTABLE SOURCE OF INFORMATION ABOUT ANYTHING, WHICH MEANS THAT IT CANNOT BE USED AS A REFERENCE MATERIAL IN ANY HISTORY CLASS IN THE CIVILISED WORLD.
Sorry, just thought that needed to be really clear!

dont blame lot for the incest
his daughters got him drunk and raped him
it wasnt his fault.
the only thing he did was tell the angry mob to rape his daughters instead of the angels...
wait why do fundies use this story for moral guidance again?
I doubt you'd be interesting in teaching the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, since that would involve teaching what the sin of Sodom actually was: a lack of hospitality towards strangers, which would be a grave offense by the desert-dwelling culture that wrote the Bible. Whereas you most likely throw in with the right-wingers whose idea of hospitality is "I got mine, screw everyone else, because if you're poor, you deserve it."
Which...deals with being inhospitable to guests. How should this tie in with LGBT history?
Also, the bible shouldn't be taught in public school anyways, but that's beside the point.
Am I the only one who laughed because he BOLDED and UNDERLINED?
first off: you have no proof that S&G actually existed.
second off: the story is clearly about inhospitality, not homosexuality.
When I taught at uni I didn't allow my students to use the babble as a source for their research papers. They had to use newspapers, academic journals, and legit, credible books and websites. In fact we all went to the library together to learn about the right way to do research and citation. And this was for an English class (not creative writing in which case I would have considered allowing works of fiction).
@yusiko - "dont blame lot for the incest
his daughters got him drunk and raped him"
He was at that fine-edged stage of drunkenness when you're too drunk to recognize your own daughters, but you can still recognize a vagina and know what to do with it.
Unless, of course, you include Rome, Amsterdam, the French district in New Orleans...........which are INTACT.
Wait, "Homosexual History"?
I can think of Alan Turing and um that's about it.
Well, I guess that's why they're teaching it then.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
