Britain's attempts to introduce civilization to Kenya, were pre-empted by the native Kenyans themselves some 3000 years before-hand.
Kenya was a collection of rival city states subsisting on a hydraulic economy (ie:centraly administered, irrigation based, agriculture)
The british actualy disrupted the economy by banning native crops, and forcing the natives to buy british wheat instead.
The Mau Mau rebellion was provoked by British racist bigotry.

What's now "Kenya" was an old and widely recognized center of commerce on the African leg of the Silk Road for centuries. Mombasa and Gedi had long been centers of international and maritime trade. Somewhat like Africa's equivalent of Singapore in the medieval world. The Arabs, Portuguese and later the British show up and uproot much of the local Swahili civilization, cause ethnic strife and foster a slave trade for centuries along with killing hundreds of thousands of Africans. There's nothing "civilized" about that.
