Quote# 82251

Brain, Maggie and all the NOM staff - thank you for your tireless efforts here in New York. We are ready to move to the next stage of the fight. This was forced on the people of New York against our will (per the usual for this agenda) and we will not let it stand.

I suspect that when we look back on this we will see that this was the moment when the people of this state (and this country) got a giant wake-up call. It reminds me of something a certain Japanese Admiral said after the attack on Pearl Harbor:

"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

More likely, you'll bee seen in the same light as those who supported segregation and Jim Crow laws - as oppressive bigots.

The thing is... Gay rights aren't about what the majority wants. It's about equal right.

If you want the right to do X, everyone else should also have the right to do X. It's that simple.

What you're doing is not democracy, it's oppression.

This was forced on the people of New York against our will...

...by the majority vote of the people of New York state.

I suspect that when we look back on this we will see that this was the moment when the people of this state (and this country) got a giant wake-up call.

The satirical magazine The Onion is known to sometimes make incredible accurate predictions (for example, they described the whole mess of the George W. Bush years in astonishing accuracy directly before his inauguration, on Jan 17, 2001: http://www.theonion.com/articles/bush-our-long-national-nightmare-of-peace-and-pros,464/).

Their view into the future looks like this:

http://www.theonion.com/articles/future-us-history-students-its-pretty-embarrassing,19099/

Future U.S. History Students: 'It's Pretty Embarrassing How Long You Guys Took To Legalize Gay Marriage'

"Bonnie", you better get used to that the future will look more like that described in the Onion article than that future imagined in your weird thoughts. And you better get used to that YOU will be among the people that the future will view as "those crazy bigots who opposed gay marriage in the early 21st century".

"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

That's what the 1964 civil right act did to the KKK. See how that worked out for them.

"This was forced on the people of New York against our will (per the usual for this agenda)..."
And just how do you think the politicians in New York got into office if the people didn't vote for them?

"...and we will not let it stand."
Because it already will, whether "we" decide to "let it" or not.

"I suspect that when we look back on this we will see that this was the moment when the people of this state (and this country) got a giant wake-up call."
Indeed it is. The wakeup call is "Queerfolk are fucking tired of your shit."

"It reminds me of something a certain Japanese Admiral said after the attack on Pearl Harbor: 'I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.'"
Oh how right you are, sweetheart. Once an oppressed group gets a taste of equal rights, their fight for equality is only going to spread elsewhere until they get it, especially after a major morale-boosting victory like this one, so we're here, we're queer, and you had better get used to it.

Doubting Thomas

Why is it when a liberal idea is passed through legislative channels, it was "forced on us against our will" but if it's something they're in favor of, it is a legitimate law passed by duly elected representatives?

There may be a sleeping giant, but it's not the one that votes Republican. It's the one where people are clamoring for tolerance & equal rights.

No, the vote passed democratically. You lost. The sooner that the US is not viewed as the laughingstock of the civilized world, the better, in my opinion, so just leave already.

Imagine the scene if you will, Bonnie & co:

A world where it's illegal to be straight. Where the population is maintained via external means (fertilisation outside the womb, test-tube babies, artificial wombs etc).

Where being gay is normal.

Those who don't openly profess to be at least Bi, is ghettoised, are looked down upon as being worse than the Ebola virus, sworn at, spat upon and punched & kicked in the street (as they have no rights whatsoever), and are persecuted in ways that only certain people can relate to.

Who are persecuted at will; their property/assets stolen, with no legal recourse whatsoever. Beaten up by 'hetero bashers', their houses burned, and the occupants shot or lynched.

Or even rounded up in concentration camps, where they're used as slave labour (where they're worked till they drop, then gassed & incinerated), or worse still: experimented upon.

That was what happened to African Americans & Jews in the past. Not very nice, eh? Now just imagine the exact same thing happening to you.

Hopefully you now realise why your homophobia can never be justified. Ever.

PROTIP: WWII =/= the Civil Rights Movement. 'Bad Analogy of the Month Award' at least, I'd say.

Fuck off. Nothing is being forced on you, you spoiled twat; the law merely stops assholes like you from forcing your ideas about marriage onto others.

Yes civil rights continue to march on, the United States is joining the rest of the first world baby step by baby step, and a bunch of conservatives are pissed off about it. The story never changes.

Yes, the citizens of New York are going to force you all into gay marriages and consequently force lots and lots of gay sex upon you. Speaking of which, please report to the New York Sexuality Readjustment Headquarters first thing in the morning, down near where the twin towers used to be. It's the building that looks totally fabulous.

I just fucking love how the NY legislation is bringing these nutbags out of the woodworks. It's one big, flailing explosion of crazy.

"I suspect that when we look back on this we will see that this was the moment when the people of this state (and this country) got a giant wake-up call."

No. When you look back you will see that actually nothing much has changed. Society won't have collaspsed, the world will be turning as normal, most people will be getting on with their lives and minding their own business, and you will still be a twat.

What will truly be embarrassing for future history students is the fact that somehow the Christian Fundamentalists gained enough control over the Republican Party to enable them to block full marriage rights for so long.

The legislature passed the measure and I'm sure there are people in NY that are just fine with gay couples getting legally married.

I really fail to see how The attack on Pearl Harbour is equated with legalised same sex marriage. Is this the same as when the likes of Tea Party members equate Gay marriage or keeping the wall of seperation of church and state to The Holocaust?
