(on Harry Potter).....

This is what concerns me. I read an article written by a former witch - she was of the opinion that things contained in the book are quite dangerous and that many of the spells and the wording contained in the books are in fact based in reality. Her statement was something along the lines of - if JK Rowling was not a witch - she was sure steeped in the traditions and knowledge of the occult enough that she certainly got all the facts right.

Just to name a few spells mentioned in the Harry Potter series:

"Accio!" "Aparecium!" "Cave Inimicum!" "Cruciatus!" "Deletrius!" "Evanesco!" "Expelliarmus!" "Impedimenta!" "Levicorpus!"

Yes, "Beccasue", I agree, these spells are based in reality. On a language called "Latin", which was used for a very long time in academic and clerical circles. You might have heard of this language...

Uh, right, because everyone knows that if you have access to ancient knowledge that has been kept secret for millennia you turn it into a popular series of books.

It actually makes me sad to read the thread on RR. :( It can't be actually true, that so many people really believe that stuff?

So Hogwarts is/was real?? ZOMG - who would have thunk it!

Or are you trying to make your fiction seem real by claiming other fiction is real so yours must be too?

I tend to treat the words of "ex-witches" with about the same credibility as "ex-gays."

Harry Potter is a fictional story that centers around a young wizard and his friends. It is not a documentary.

Funny thing Beccasue... your "former witch" is probably you and your own bizzare fantasys about so-called "witches".
The "spells" in HP books are just faux latin nonsense along the lines of "gofastius" (go-fast-ius) as a speed enhansing spell.
It is FICTION aimed at CHILDREN and young teens.

I believe, to the contrary, that JK Rowling is on record as saying she just made all that stuff up and didn't do much research at all.

I actually know a fair deal about "real" magic and "the traditions and knowledge of the occult" and let me just tell you one thing: No.

Harry Potter has a lot of traditional fantasy imagery, but very little of it based on any "real" magical tradition. The vast majority of "real" magic is highly ritualized and complex. This is because magic doesn't really function on any kind of supernatural level. It functions on psychology. The point of a ritual is to get you as immersed as possible in a very emotionally charged atmosphere. The idea is that this focuses your thoughts and feelings toward whatever your goal is and creates a mindset more inclined toward succeeding. Then, just like with prayer, the good old Confirmation Bias takes care of the rest. Some people in the occult community understand that it's just a placebo, most don't (And I think the ones that do prefer it that way. It's much easier to manipulate someone if they think you have special powers than if they realize you're just a good psychologist.), but I think they'd all laugh at you if you told them Harry Potter was real magic.

I don't believe you, since I distrust the judgement of anyone stupid enough to believe that magic is real and witches have powers.

many of the spells and the wording contained in the books are in fact based in reality.

yes, the wording of spells in harry potter is indeed based in reality. it's called "latin". latin persists today in about half of english vocabulary, and there's even a whole family of languages that are continuations of latin. they're called "romance languages", and modern english is so heavily influenced by latin through old french and proto-romance that it is sorta like an "honorary" romance language itself.

anyway, that means you're communicating in WITCHCRAFT OMG. you better be quiet lest you make jesus very angry by casting spells with your words.
