Quote# 83288

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has suggested gay marriage is to blame for America's economic woes.

In a radio interview on Catholic Radio San Diego to pitch his book A Nation Like No Other, his short film Nine Days that Changed the World, and his wife Callista Gingrich's upcoming children's book Sweet Land of Liberty, host Charles Limandri asked Gingrich why he believed “radical secularists” are attacking the family.

“The concept of family being between man and woman and the concept of all these core values that grow out of 3,000 years of Judeo-Christian tradition,” Gingrich answered. “This is a direct threat to the entire secular world.”

“We're becoming increasingly secular, the family is under attack and economically we're experiencing woes like we've never known in our history it seems. So what is the connection here?” Limandri asked.

“You have to recognize that free enterprise is based on free people and … free people are based on faith,” Gingrich replied. “The very basis of our belief and freedom is that we believe we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights. The very source of our strength is that we believe these are truths – not theories, not ideologies, not gimmicks, not political consultants, powerpoints – truths, and so there's a core absolute overlap between free enterprise, freedom and freedom of faith. And if you don't have freedom of faith in the end you're not going to have free enterprise because there's no moral force that defends and protects you.”

Not Newt and the repubs. And never never George Jesus Bush, oh no!

@ Anon-e-moose
one George Dumbya Bush: a married heterosexual man.

*ahem* Jeff Gannon, Bush's "top".

Typical right-wing politician: always demonizing some weaker group of people to score political points. If it's not gays, it's teachers; if it's not teachers, it's immigrants; if it's not immigrants, it's atheists. But this demonizing has gotten a lot worse since the financial collapse, and it's very scary.

Just because the phrase free market/enterprise has the word free in it,doesn't mean that it has anything to do with freedom of/from religion...

Maybe he'd care to explain how Canada, which legalized same-sex marriage over six years ago, weathered the recession with a lot less damage than the USA. If his argument was anything other than rubbish it should have been the opposite.

"We in the UK have a state religion: the Church of England."

That's only the state religion in England, funnily enough. The Presbyterian Church of Scotland ("the Kirk") is the national religion of Scotland. There is no national religion in Wales (since 1920) or Northern Ireland.

"core values that grow out of 3,000 years of Judeo-Christian tradition" I actually think your conservative values are much more recent than that. As is shown by how different they are to the values of the Old Testament.
"Free people are based on faith" No, that makes no sense. Free people would be free to have no faith. They would be free to inquire and make up their minds and not blindly obey a creed or dogma of some kind.
"We believe these are truths" but those truths are "held to be self-evident". They were arrived at by rational inquiry, often in the face of the opposition of the church. It says nothing in the bible about free enterprise or life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Freedom of faith implies freedom from faith, or it isn't freedom at all. And what about liberation theology? What about Christian socialism? There is no reason at all why Christianity should bolster up and protect the market. In fact, given all the biblical injunctions against covetousness and greed, quite the opposite.

Why is it that the Americans who bang on about 'inalienable rights' the most seem to always be the ones desperately trying to take these rights away from others?

Somebody remind these people what inalienable means...

He doesn't sound different from other people who have talked this garbage before. There was another group that persecuted gays? I'll give you a hint: Europe 1933-1945 in that general time period anyway)

@Goosey (emphasis added)

"The Presbyterian Church of Scotland ("the Kirk") is the national religion of Scotland."

And as James Tiberius himself is the source of all awesomeness in the universe, it's inevitable that his power would radiate and affect those who are around him on a regular basis - but in a positive way:

Spock: awesomely Logical.
Hikaru Sulu: awesomely Fabulous.
Pavel Chekov: his gun is awesome!
Leonard H. 'Bones' McCoy: awesomely cynical - but a cynic with a heart of pure Latinum.
Nyota Uhura: awesomely Sexy. (I mean, her in that uniform & boots in "TOS"? Rawr! :9 )

Thus, not for nothing was Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott known as 'The Miracle Worker'. Q.E. and D.

“You have to recognize that free enterprise is based on free people and … free people are based on faith,”

No "free people" is based on the separation of the masses from the land creating a class of proletarians (free labour, or wage slaves depending on your ideological perspective) who sell their labour for wages.

Bugger all to do with faith.

The reason there is economic problems is because capitalism goes through boom and bust cycles. "capitalism is the permissive cause of crisis" as I like to put it.

Maybe free enterprise is what destroys the family...if we agree with Marx, that is..."all the family ties between the proletarians are torn asunder..." Maybe it's capitalism that weakens religion, "all that is holy is profaned..." So maybe your one God (free enterprise) is destroying the basis for your other one...

According to Newt, marriage is between one man and one woman, but sex is between one man and as many women he can cheat with behind his ill wife's back.
