Quote# 83787

The Master's School, a K-12 Christian school in West Simsbury, Connecticut, issued " a not thinly veiled threat" to soon-to-be senior Rachel Aviles to withdraw rather than be expelled after learning she was a lesbian, FOX CT reports:

Masters This was to be her senior year and a former coach says she would have been up for all kinds of awards. But last spring she went on a class trip where several students, Aviles among them, pretended to be married. They made "wifey" phone calls to one another. They held hands — not unusual among same-sex friends at Master's, Aviles said.

"Looking back, it was kind of stupid," said Aviles, of Hartford. "But it was harmless."

Word got back to the administration, and the students were called in and questioned about their sexual orientation. When it was her turn, Aviles told administrators that she is a lesbian. Her friends knew. Teachers didn't.

Aviles said the school then urged her to withdraw rather than be expelled.

Aviles' former coach Heather Lodovico discussed the incident:

"She texted me and said something like 'They kicked me out,' and I made a joke, 'What, are you pregnant?' and she said, 'No, worse. I'm gay,'" said Lodovico.

The coach said she immediately got on the phone to see if the decision could be reversed, but no.

The school's headmaster refuses to discuss Aviles' dismissal, citing privacy concerns.

Wow, for an administration that held a school-wide inquisition to root out the gay students, they sure are concerned with privacy all of the sudden.

A little hung up there, aren't we?

"The school's headmaster refuses to discuss Aviles' dismissal, citing privacy concerns."

Man, fuck you and your 'privacy concerns'. You sure as hell don't seem concerned with anyone else's privacy.

Another example of the inability for fundies to distinguish between fantasy and reality, AND delicious fundie hypocrisy? It's my lucky day.

The girl was one of their best students but they ditch her for "Teh Ghey!".

Normally, I would go "ACLU TIME!" but since this is a Religious school it might be hard.

However, it's their loss & perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. She's too good for those slimy fundies & those fundy schools teach a load of hogwash, anyway! She needs a real school that doesn't believe in talking snakes!

Nonetheless, these people deserve a knuckle sandwich & a swirlie.

Welcome to the America that the religious right wants to create. Where gays can be punished for existing.

What the fuck, they're expelling her for being a lesbian? Last I checked being gay wasn't illegal. Imagine the shitstorm that would result if instead of one of their students came out as a lesbian, she revealed herself to be oh-so-slightly black, but due to the one-drop rule counted fully. Obviously, any school who would expel a student for something like that would commit a major travesty of justice, so why is it suddenly acceptable to have the exact same exclusionary policy towards gays? Religious or not religious, this school is going to be sued.

Mister Spak

The worst part is, their victim doesn't think it's a big deal.

Doubting Thomas

But don't forget, Christians are the ones being persectuted by gays.

This is why all the fundies’ attempts to channel money to public schools under the guise of choice should not be tolerated.

"The worst part is, their victim doesn't think it's a big deal."

Yeah, that got me too.

This is why I will fight tooth and nail to prevent a Christian theocracy from taking hold in this country. Oh, and so much for "hate the sin but love the sinner."

On one hand, it's a private school, so unless civil rights laws are fixed they can expel anyone for any reason unless it's related to race.

On the other hand, the guy is a douche and deserves all the bad karma this'll get him.

9/14/2011 7:07:24 AM

Why don't you silly fuckers listen to your Savior? He told you, rather explicitly, that you're to love god and love your neighbor and that there are no other commandments greater than these. That includes the Ten Commandments, Leviticus (where you get this "Gays are bad!" shit from) and anything that nutjob Paul said.

How about you stop being bigoted jackasses, grow the fuck up and stop shaming your Jesus into disavowing you.

9/14/2011 7:09:25 AM

Street Sharks

Well it is a private school so whatever.

She is probably better off NOT being around these backward and bigoted fucks anyway.

9/14/2011 7:27:02 AM

Is she good looking?

9/14/2011 7:32:47 AM

Oh, I can see the lawyers all but fighting over themselves, to take Ms. Aviles' case. Four words:

No win, no fee. >:D

Can you say 'ACLU', Master's School? I know you can.

Now I know why fundies want a theocratic dictatorship in the US. That pesky legal document, known as the US Constitution, just keeps fucking up their agenda. Every. Single. Time.

Roe vs. Wade.
Kitzmiller vs. Dover.
Prop. 8.

Yet you rely on said legal document to guarantee your freedom of worship, no less. Enjoy your paradox, fundies.

The phrase 'You can't have your cake and eat it' exists for a reason.

Citing privacy here exposed your hypocrisy. And that's the least of your worries here. I'm glad I went to a public school

9/14/2011 9:01:32 AM

When I saw this story, I wanted to post "In before the obligatory private-businesses-can-fuck-you-all-they-want-it's-only-oppression-if-it's-from-the-government", but I see it's already too late.

9/14/2011 9:07:45 AM

Someone (not saying a name) was expelled from my school for possession of knives. (Like combat/swiss-army knives, not kitchen)

This school expels people for being gay.

So being gay is as bad as carrying a knife in school?!?

BTW, if Leviticus is the only reason to oppose homosexuality, don't bother. I thought Christians were supposed to obey the New Testament, not the Old. And besides, God's commandment of "thou shall not kill" SHOULD override "stone the gays."

Who will you listen to: A MAN who wants gays to be stoned, or the SUPREME BEING OF THE UNIVERSE?

9/14/2011 9:16:53 AM

the doctor

well, what more can you expect from a school where a megalomaniac time lord went to school?

9/14/2011 9:19:17 AM

Just more evidence that religion isn't there to make people better or comfort but to allow bigoted assholes to use their prejudices without consequence

9/14/2011 9:23:36 AM

@Panz: Bullshit. The reasonable majority of religious people just don't make the news because decent people being nice and sensible and not pushing their views on people aren't interesting.
