"Seriously? This is one of the reasons I think people shouldn't take on a religious belief. Not only do I have to go to court, but I feel extremely guilty this happened over a trivial matter."
You should not feel guilty. You tried your best to help her. I sincerely hope your forthcoming lawsuit is an open-and-shut case in your favour.

If I ever come to be in the same situation as that woman, I'll ask the paramedic "Mary Ann or Ginger?"
If he gives the wrong answer, then too bad for me, it's hands off.
Religion is stupid, but the Mary Ann or Ginger question is certainly worth dying for. And I can burden the perverted fool who gave the wrong answer with a guilt complex. Yipee, I win!

When she was 16, my wife was in a very bad car accident one Sunday afternoon. The fundie paramedic criticized her for not going to church, and told her that she should thank Jesus that she was wearing her seat belt.
I'm just glad that the patient rather than the paramedic was the fundie this time.
@checkmate:
I have to ask... what is the right answer?

It isn't your fault.
You're not responsible.

So, let me summarize:
Woman: Dirty atheist! I don't want your help!
Paramedic: (calmly) You could die without it.
Woman: I don't care! I don't want no damn dirty atheist layin' their hands on me!
Paramedic: Ma'am, I can't legally abandon you. I have to take care of these wounds.
Woman: (makes sign of the cross) AWAY, SPAWN OF SATAN!!
Paramedic: (sigh) Very well. If you insist. Can someone at least sign these papers to show that I offered help and that she refused it?
Husband: Give it here. I'll sign it. Just keep them atheist hands where I can see'em. And don't go near the pets. We don't want them to catch your atheism.
Paramedic: Your call. (leaves)
Woman: Boy, am I relieved that that evil dirty atheist is gone. (dies)
Husband: ...I'mma sue that dirty paramedic for not helping my wife!
No, you should not feel guilty about this in the least. The woman and her family have only themselves to blame for their bigotry and stupidity.

I think I've seen this before on the UGAthiests' Facebook page. Nevertheless, that woman made a really stupid decision that cost her her life, and I can't really pity her for it. My pity goes out to the paramedic who had to deal with her.

Not wanting medical care when you'll probably die without it sounds like an altered mental status to me.

She refused treatment because of bullcrap reasons, namely religious fundementalism. Still it's terrible to have this happen even if there's no way the paramedic could have known she'd react in such a way.
@LAchlan
You're horrible.

And this right here is the problem with religions. Even if the religion itself is not inherently dangerous, almost by definition a religion requires, encourages and perpetuates ignorance and gullibility, and that IS inherently dangerous.
That said, I am highly skeptical of the validity of the story. Even despite all the bullshit I've seen on this website I severely doubt anyone was this stupid, and the entire thing seems too obvious.

She still refused, so I had to get her to sign the proper documentation and then I left.
Meh, as long as she signed the release, it's not your problem. To ease your mental anguish, do you wish your roles reversed and it was you who died?
Didn't think so.

What a tragedy. If Jesus was real he would probably not be happy about that. But since when did Christians care about his views?

Don't feel guilty, you warned her and she took it upon herself to tell you to not help her out. Maybe she though Jesus would fly down and heal her, or that something else would magically make her better. You tried your best to help someone in dire need and did everything you could. It could be construed as assault if you continued to apply care.
This just saddens me that someone would be so far gone down that path that they would rather risk death then allow someone without the same believes help them live.

Some people are such bigots they'd rather die than have to deal with an "inferior". It's a very scary type of thinking especially when given any kind of power.

An unusual article, to say the least.
So used to hearing quotes directly from Fundies that an anecdotal story seems refreshing.

This isn't an argument against having a religion, it's an argument against being a fucking moron.
I'm not aware of anything in the Bible which suggests that you should efuse to have your life saved by an atheist.
Yes this woman used her religion as an excuse to have a pop at an atheist but it's glaringly obvious that she was in fact just stupid enough to make ridiculous assumptions about her religion instead of understanding it.

Sad that people think their religion is more important than their life.
And now the husband is going to be wasting a lot of people's time and money, he doesn't have a case, that paramedic did follow procedure.

My problem with this story is that a person who would refuse life-saving treatment because of religion would be considered of healthy or normal mental status and fit to sign such a document.
IMO that woman shouldn't have been given the option. She was clearly insane.

Credibility issues notwithstanding, how is this different from any fundie who:
1. Would refuse a lifesaving transfusion (or any other procedure) because their interpretation of the bible prohibits it?
2. Would refuse treatment because their caregiver is gay
Or, for that matter, a white supremacist who would refuse treatment from a black person?
We know that these people exist...
