Quote# 84877

During a town hall meeting in Ottumwa, Iowa Friday afternoon, Rick Santorum argued that Americans receive too many government benefits and ought to “suffer” in the Christian tradition. If “you’re lower income, you can qualify for Medicaid, you can qualify for food stamps, you can qualify for housing assistance,” Santorum complained, before adding, “suffering is part of life and it’s not a bad thing, it is an essential thing in life.”

What bothers me most is that, in practically every democracy in the world, such statement is a political suicide: the guy would not be elected even kids team coach.

... But USA considers him a viable candidate....

“suffering is part of life as long as I am not the one doing the suffering”

fixed.

Nice to hear the pampered, preening over-privileged Mr Santorum telling the poor that he's helped to screw over that they should be totally abandoned by the state so that he can pay a couple of cents less tax.

The difference between the a developed nation and a Third World nation is how it treat its lower income population; if America doesn't shape up and draw its leaders from a better population pool, in a few decades it would no longer qualify as a developed country.

“suffer” in the Christian tradition.

Yup, and religious oganizations should shut down those evil charities they run. The Salvation Army is nothing but the extended arm of Satan.

When Jesus said "clothe the poor" he obviously meant "cover them with righteous suffering".

In fact, it would be pleasing in God's eyes and the Christian duty to fire as many people from work as possible. Right before Christmas. The suffering will get them right into heaven, and you too. Everybody wins!

Right, this is the solution. Bring Santorum to the UK, take away his passport and all his cash and bank cards. Allocate him a flat in a deprived part of Leeds or Bradford. Leave him to hunt for work or apply for benefit, and watch how he gets on. But don't stop there. Leave him in that situation for five years. He has to learn to survive in that situation with no outside help allowed. He has to sink or swim... for FIVE years.

Then, and only then, after the five years are up, should he ever be allowed to tell people what help they should or should not receive.

I was in this position (thankfully not in Leeds or Bradford) for close to five years.

Let's hope he loses his job and his home, his wife leaves him and his kids turn against him and he ends up on the streets. And if he complains, we'll just say, "hey, stop whining. Suffering is part of life."

> “suffer” in the Christian tradition

No, suffering is part of the existence.

Inflicting suffering on oneself, and, spectacularly failing that, to others, is the Christian tradition.

Then you should continue suffering unemployment so stop running for president. And no unemployment for you either.

In the U.S. we have soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that must go on food stamps in order to provide for their families. I know this because, as a young airman, I had to use food stamps to feed my wife and children. I was out there defending my country, putting my life on the line for freedom, and you think I wasn't suffering enough? You think I received too many handouts? You, Mr. Santorum, are an ass hole.

Does the 'suffering' actually apply to Santorum? Or is he in the 'better off' bracket?

If the latter then I smell hypocrisy, which is a worse smell than even bullshit.

How is it Americans haven't snffied him out long before now? How is it Americans tolerate such selfish and uncaring attitudes in their politicians?

How is it that American has become a plutocracy where those at the top 1% have more than the lower 99%

Santorum stinks and American policies stink too. Time for a change.

Santorum wouldn't last pissing time in most of Europe.

Or you could imagine a civilized country. You could imagine moving forward with the times, making the world better for everyone, not just the privileged few. You could imagine doing something for someone other than yourself, feeling good knowing that your politics and taxes help feed someone who drew a short straw in the lottery of life.

Or you could be a selfish fucking dick. Whatever you prefer.

Further proof that Republicans have no compassion whatsoever.

And didn't your hero Jesus say something about feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, etc? Oh wait, you think "clothing the naked" means getting rid of porn.
