HILDALE, Washington County — As the year comes to an end and the followers of Warren Jeffs await the apocalypse he has predicted, they're living under a challenging edict: they're forbidden to have sex until Jeffs is sprung from a Texas prison.
"He has predicted that the walls in the prison where he's at will fall and crumble," said Joni Holm, who has many relatives in the polygamous FLDS faith.
According to Holm, Fundamentalist LDS Church members also face their faith's most severe punishment, excommunication, if they conceive a child.
It's one of the strangest edicts in a season full of them. Jeffs has issued a stream of revelations, prophecies and orders to his congregation in the border community of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz.
The recent edicts from Jeffs' prison cell seem to be having two contradictory effects. Many are leaving the FLDS faith in disgust. Those who stay are reported to be increasingly devoted to a man who is serving a lifetime sentence for raping underage girls.
According to numerous critics and outside observers, the imprisoned FLDS leader has sometimes acted through his brother Lyle and other times has spoken directly to his congregation over the phone from prison. He recently banned many of the things his followers enjoy: bicycles, ATVs, trampolines, even children's toys. But the sex edict reaches into the bedrooms of all his devoted followers.
According to Holm, Jeffs declared all existing marriages to be void.
"Right now they have all been told that they are not to live as husband and wife," Holm said. "They can live in the same house, but they are not to have sexual relationships until Warren comes out and 'reseals' them."

Some of those followers will be waiting a long time.

He will lose all followers should he keep going.

The sick bastard's last laugh:
"If I can't get my bone on with underaged girls in marriages I arranged myself then nobody can have sex, period. And since my marriages were deemed sick parodies then no marriage in my flock is valid until I get out and perform it again personally. Fuck all y'all and God Bless."

There can be no greater proof that leadership of a cult is not about worship or glorification of your god but about glorification of yourself. Religion exists for the ego and for no other purpose.

It has become even more apparent that Jeffs is just another delusional cult leader and his followers are simply delusional.

Eh, just another personality cult.

Fundamentalist LDS Church members also face their faith's most severe punishment, excommunication
This is one of the things I've never really understood about whacky sects. They will go to extremes to make sure nobody leaves their group, sometimes actually imprisoning members or threatning them with the harshest consequences.
FLDS, Scientology, Jonestown, Branch Davidians, The Family International (Children of God), and countless others. They'll persecute you to no end if you try to leave and even after you've left.
However, the "most severe punishment" they all have is excommunication, i.e. kicking you out. What am I missing?
Ok, I know it's more complicated than just that, but still.

@checkmate: dammit, checkmate! why can't i find a witty and humorous response to that??
i think the main fear is in the spiritual realm, and not the physical...
mind over matter and all the puns associated with it in this case, methinks... ok, that was my best shot

Cult leader's edicts get increasingly crazy and paranoid.
And this in the news because..?

If he can't screw children in person then NO ONE CAN. Though they probably do anyway.

He shouldn't be allowed a willy.

Every time I hear this story, I can't help but think that Jeffs is indirectly trying to convince his followers to spring him from prison. I also can't see any scenario in which that sort of thing would end well, but, you know, delusional cult leader and all that.

"I'm sitting here in a prison cell, so why should anyone else be having any fun?"

Has anyone here ever read Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer? It's all about these fundie Mormon sects, especially this one, Hildale, which seem like some of the worst places to live in the world, especially if you're a woman. Anyway, this guy Jeffs is a giant piece of work-even more so than you would assume here, seeing as he's serving time for raping underage girls.
I would shake my head at the total brainwashing, but it is my hope that having read the book I mentioned above that this actually has a beneficial effect on the girls of Hildale. It's absolutely sickening what they go through, they're married off in their teens, sometimes to stepfathers or even uncles. The married couple is required to consummate their marriage directly on the ceremony, so there's a bed in the town temple. Sometimes the girls are raped so violently they hemorrhage. Though some of the men may disobey Jeffs in secret, I hope this prevents those girls from experiencing that fate.

Ignore the ban. If asked to justify this, say "I thought you said we can no longer have socks."

Passerby: Believe me, Jeffs is still getting boned. Just not with underaged girls.

So the reasonable ones leave and the deranged ones go on to ensure that this faith dies with them and all the while we keep a rapist in prison. There is literally no down side for society at all in this scenario.

If fundies issue edicts to other fundies not to breed and they obey, can I then present this to them as proof of natural selection?

No sex, no bicycles... AND NO TRAMPOLINES? What kind of twisted man is he?
1/9/2012 6:10:15 PM
No sex means no babies which means no new FLDS church members.
That works for me. Let the stupid cult die out.
1/9/2012 6:16:14 PM
But who could possibly resist with those lookers?
1/9/2012 6:24:45 PM
That reminds me of Rock Thériault, another monstrous cult leader. When he went to prison, his last remaining faithful continued abusing themselves for years for him, starving themselves so all their money would be for his use. One of his "wives" coming to visit him entered the prison on her hands and knees, not out of some of their cult rituals, but because she was so malnourished that standing made her faint.

I have. And Carolyn Jessop, Flora Jessop and Elissa Wall's books. This may have spared a lot of young girls the same fate, but somehow I still have a feeling this isn't going to end well. It never does with these crazy cults.

"According to Holm, Jeffs declared all existing marriages to be void."
It takes one to know one.
Edit: @ passerby: You have absolutely nailed it. Serial killers will go to their graves without revealing their dump sites because it's all about retaining the control. This psycho is just a slightly different flavor.
@ sexy bitch: I get the lack of makeup, but what's with the Grandma Walton haircuts?
