Gays are perfectly capable of having children, and often do - although not with their partners (same is true of divorced straight couples who remarry). And their kids turn out pretty much like kids raised by straight couples.
In the olden days, when men were out working in the fields or hunting 14 hours a day, children rarely saw men during the day. Groups of children were cared for by groups of women. Young children aren't naturally as tightly attached to their parents or their families as we like to think.
