Can we have ‘purpose’ without intelligent design? By purpose I mean a reason to live, to exist, to do anything at all without an overwhelming sense of futility seeping in to every possible facet of our existence. First, we would have to understand what is automatically implied by creation being random.

Without intelligent design, we are left with the universe coming from nothing, and life slowly evolving to what it is today. If that is what occurred, my question then is this: What would be the point? Without God, we’re just a random being on a randomly created planet. There can be no point to our existence because we were never created by anything other than chance to begin with.

This is no secret though. The great thinker Nietzche, an Atheist, popularized the idea of nihilism, the thought that life has no purpose if there is no afterlife to work towards or look forward to.

Why am I telling you this? Because I know of a few Atheists who read my blog on occasion, and know they haven’t thought their beliefs through. I also want the Christians who read my blog to understand this concept, because it is useful to discuss when witnessing.

Here is what I have noticed. I have never met an Atheist who really lived like an Atheist. They have goals, a sense of value for their lives and others, and purpose just like everyone else. To truly be an Atheist, you would have to realize the futility of life, and act on that futility. To indulge in every whim, to not care about your life or others, because we’re all going to die one day anyway, so why not today?

But this reasoning isn’t enough cause to convert to Christianity or any other religion. Personally, I look at the person and work of Jesus Christ, His fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies, and put my faith in Him. Fear of an angry God or repercussions of my life in a possible afterlife were never causes of my conversion, both of those are signs of a weak mind.

I pray this proved beneficial to you. If you have any questions, and even if you want to completely refute my points, please feel free to use my Ask.
