Quote# 85815

At the risk of being called bigoted I'll share with you this story from my teens today...

They go to a semi-private high school here in town that has approx. 7 chinese students...some are American some are exchange kids....

For the second time this school year the cafeteria has made traditional chinese cuisine....that is so bland and nasty (what my kids say) that they throw most of their lunch away....as do most of their school mates...my kids love "American" chinese takeout BTW

I understand that its the chinese new year and I understand the school wants to teach tolerance but why do they almost have to force feed it to them. In the interest of the well being of the gen'l population why isnt regular American food served and maybe something special done for those few that celebrate the chinese new year.......

It makes me sick that all that money and food went to waste today and my kids any many others were left hungry....

That doesn't seem racist. I don't see her blaming Chinese for some bad food.

Stupid, yes, but not fundie or racist.

Not RSTDT material, just some mom whining about bland food.

I imagine that school cafetaria-made 'Chinese' food is about as unappealing as school cafeteria-made 'American' food. Crap is crap. Or do her kids just gobble down the "Creamed chipped beef on toast" at school? Just a whiner.

So your school kitchen is shit. So what?

(And yeah, it is a bit racist. It's the bit about force-feeding tolerance that's the giveaway).

Oh shut the fuck up. Really.

Your kids love Chinese food, but the school feeding Chinese food to kids is forcing Chinese culture on them?

And of course school food is bland. The high school I went to, all the food was awful.

I don't really think this is racist.

This might be racist. It's hard to tell. He/she talks about "traditional" Chinese cuisine, that is bland and nasty, and "American" Chinese takeout, which is nice. I don't know if they're criticising the school's cuisine, or if they think that the "traditional" Chinese cuisine of some random school chef in the States is the same as real traditional Chinese cuisine. They're also complaining that regular American food isn't being served instead. He/she also seems to think that the only reason to serve non-"American" food is in order to "force feed" tolerance to kids, rather than maybe to widen their culinary horizons. This does seem racist, and also dumb as hell.

In any case, there's a lot of hearsay here. Maybe loads of the kids at school actually liked the food. Surely, a few times a year, maybe it's worth exposing American kids to more than "regular American food", consisting as it does of a lot of deep-fried things, tasteless cheese, and various "patties" made of mechanically-recovered meat.

Should explain that an awful lot of what gwailos think of as Chinese food is what illiterate Chinese immigrants think is what gwailos like to eat. Huge scope for misunderstanding here.

Maybe next time the school should have Chinese takeout instead?

This is pretty understandable, people have different tastes, so I fail to see this as completely racist.

Why not just tell your kids to buck up and be thankful they even got lunch today? Geez, parents these days.

Also, 'tolerance' is not a bad word, it's the only thing keeping your neighbors from railing you right out of the community.

I actually don't see a problem with this. The school should serve food the kids will actually eat, and most kids aren't going to want to try new foods at school.

There is nothing wrong with eating foods from other countries if you like it, but at school, I'd just like some pizza or a hot dog, please.

School cafeteries serving up bland food? This is news to me.

American "Chinese" takeout is not Chinese food, BTW.

And it was bland? Try some from Hunan Province. I guarantee they'll be looking for some Mexican food to cool their mouths down.

To say that this isn't racist means that people here were a little desensitised by the usual quotes. Not all racists are genocidal maniacs or hysteric basement dwellers trying to convince themselves that having white skin makes them at least better than some people despite doing nothing with their own life.

This one thinks her family shouldn't be exposed to foreign things that upset their habits. The level of racism is mild, I wouldn't have submitted here, but it's going too far to say it isn't racist at all.
And frankly, who raises their kids to throw food away because they find it bland?? At that age I would have eaten it even if it moved!

I'd have a few choice words about the regular fare served in school cafeterias. As for the 'authenticity' of takeout vs high school fricking cafeteria Chinese cuisine: It's a fricking high school cafeteria.

Wasted food however is an entirely valid concern, as are the funds wasted with it. While food is an important aspect of culture there are certainly better ways to immerse students in culture than horrible imitations from the cafeteria.

Hell, telling Chinese ghost stories would be more informative and slightly less horrifying.

I can guarantee that no school cafeteria made anything resembling traditional Chinese food. The Chinese students probably didn't even recognize it as Chinese.

I'm sure her kids freaked when they got a meal containing vegetable matter....

Then why not just pack their lunches like anyone who doesn't care for the cafeteria food does?

See, I'd almost put this in CT too. When normal people find nasty cafeteria food, they suck it up and pack their own lunch. When bigoted conspiracy theorists find it, they assume it's all about "force-feeding tolerance."

I'm sure the "regular American food" at that cafeteria is shit too. Your kids are whining because this time it's unfamiliar shit.
