@ Brendan Rizzo:
I think you're looking at Europe through rose-tinted specs, somwehat. We do gang wars, and race riots, and corrupt pols quite as well as any other part of the developed world. Silvio Berlusconi and Jean-Marie le Pen are names to bear in mind here.
2/27/2012 9:06:36 AM
Actually, outlawing lying on pain of death (for politicians) sounds like a bloody good idea. Or actually, no, I suppose every single politician would instantly have to be executed. Still, it's worth looking in to.
Oh, and yeah, this guy is hilariously crazy. "Dimocrats" indeed. And he calls himself an adult...
2/27/2012 9:08:07 AM
You know what they call a one party system right? Fascism.
2/27/2012 9:08:13 AM
I think we should also make a law under penalty of death is is the use of capitalizing random words, poor spelling, improper punctuation, and (parentheses) where it is unnecessary.
2/27/2012 9:13:14 AM
Damn, we're busted. Somebody snitched on our communions of powdered-fetus wafers and amniotic wine.
2/27/2012 9:29:11 AM
Funny how when I mentioned those very people to show that Europe was just as bad, everyone else on here said that "no, that's different" and that it was only America that has a problem with these crazies. Make up your minds. Then again, I'm probably doomed to constantly be disagreeing with everyone else here.
Besides, I don't think the countries outside the US are perfect. I just think they're better. Sadly, the facts agree with me. (And if I were to leave, I'd go to Canada, rather than anywhere in Europe. It's far closer.)
And why is that a problem exactly? Hint, if every politician lies, that means they're all equally bad. If it's that endemic, and it is, then we need such ultra-draconian measures.
2/27/2012 9:36:53 AM
And all this warrgarbl (on both sides I have to admit) is over a measure to equalize invasive legislature in Georgia. That is, to apply a bill outlawing male vasectomies to counter the bill banning 20+ week abortions. I am not too keen to the idea, but I can always move to another state. Then again, I don't feel ready to not have kids yet, so I may be suffering from Who-Gives-A-Fuck Syndrome.
As for moving to Europe, it may be too expensive to live there, and it would be better for all of us sane Americans to stay and fight for our rights than flee and cower as the fascists take over. As much as this country may have gone to the dogs, it is still our country. Nothing from either party would change that. Nothing.
2/27/2012 9:58:35 AM
"Face it, what we REALLY need, is a law (under penalty of death) that keeps ALL dimocrats out of politics."
Hey, fuckwit, time to read the Constitution again. What you're proposing isn't legal and never will be as long as this is a free country.
"Or maybe we could just pass a law (with the same penalty) for lying, and that would clean them out pretty quickly too."
That would likely keep more of your guys out of politics than Democrats. The Republicans have more liars per capita.
"Dimocrats are just too stupid to be in politics, making decisions for others.
As for making decisons for others, why don't you look into why the Republicans always want to control everyone's sexuality?
2/27/2012 10:02:32 AM
"Dimocrats are just too stupid to be in politics, making decisions for others. "
Doth protest too much.
2/27/2012 10:18:15 AM
"Or maybe we could just pass a law (with the same penalty) for lying"
Wow... you really want all republican politicians dead?? I don't think you thought things through... (not a surprise really)
2/27/2012 10:33:35 AM
i was trolling in class (contemporary history)with that same (basic) argument: sanction so violently dishonesty in the governmental spheres so as to weed out everything.
my argument went something like this:
-if the politicians represent the country and the nation (there's a difference) then they must obey the tenets and laws in place. they are the face/ representative, and so must not shame the people they represent.
-if you impose total transparency on them, you can also impose the service to the people for X amount of time (depending on election policies).
-here comes the sanctions: corruption, lies, libel, warmongering, crime in general, must be punished with such severity as to discourage not the politician from being caught, but to discourage him/her to even think from it.
from there you get the general idea. the debate was sparked from the Strauss-Khan sex-scandal, but imagine the same for every crooked politician, be it the le pen clan's xenophobia and fascist tendencies (ex-poujadists)to berlusconi's shady (and not-so-shady) dealings, just to cite two other politicians already named above.
i said this in class mainly to troll and not play the devil's advocate, but the consensus reached was that it could cleanse the spheres of the high and mighty sufficiently to bring back meaning to the concept of democracy (a dictature of the population).
...then again, maybe i'm in class with a bunch of anarchists... still a fun lesson though
2/27/2012 11:35:51 AM
Yeah. The Constitution won't allow that.
The American Nazi Party is allowed to exist and even have people run for office. But (thankfully) they are far too few in number and far too weak to do so.
@ Brendan Rizzo
Just one question: can you at LEAST wait until November 2012 to make up your mind about moving. There is still hope for this country (Romney and Santorum's poll numbers are abyssmal).
Would a Democratic landslide renew your faith in America? Such a win might permanently change Republican policy (if not destroy them completely).
2/27/2012 12:27:34 PM
Fundies Make Me Sick
Hyper-Conservatards like you lack any humanity so maybe we need the death penalty for people who display sociopathic tendencies.
And if such a law were passed, humans would go extinct because everybody lies.
2/27/2012 1:15:07 PM
Is "dimocrat" one of those lame fundie neologisms (like "evilution") or is this guy just even stupider than he would first appear?
2/27/2012 1:16:44 PM
It might. Depends on what happens. It's not like I actually have the resources to move anyway; I'm just spouting hot air.
Then again, unless protests so massive they make the year 1968 look calm in comparison occur, I'll probably still be complaining.
2/27/2012 1:19:02 PM
most of the candidates I respected have been weeded out, and it looks like it's going to be Gingrich, Santorum or Romney. Yippee?
Yes, "weeded out" is a perfect analogy. The weeds are gone and now there's only crabgrass left.
But, His4Life, don't despair, you only have to put up with any one of the Republican candidates until November, then they'll all fall back into obscurity for another four years. All they'll leave behind during Obama's second term will be extreme damage they did to the Republican Party and the hate they spread around the country.
2/27/2012 1:57:33 PM
These people really need to understand what they are saying.
2/27/2012 2:01:59 PM
Face it, what we REALLY need, is a law (under penalty of death) that keeps ALL dimocrats out of politics.
What's stopping you? Just get a majority in 38 of the 50 states to agree to amend the US Constitution to change the voting requirements and get rid of that pesky First Amendment "peaceably to assemble and petition the government for a redress of grievances" crap.
Oh, wait, the "we" you refer to is only a handful of nut-jobs, so you don't have the votes.
2/27/2012 3:10:13 PM
I stopped reading after you said dimocrats. Your argument is automatically invalidated. You lose.
Edit: I actually kind of know what Brendan Rizzo is saying. While I know I'm extremely lucky to live in the United States rather than, say, Somalia, at the same time I'd love to live somewhere that treated its poor with dignity with universal healthcare and where a politician claiming that Satan is attacking the country would be laughed out of the public sphere instead of being considered a frontrunner. And yes, I know about fucks like le Pen. Well, emigrating isn't really an option for me in the foreseeable future, so I'll just cling to my impossible fantasy of Bernie Sanders being elected president.
2/27/2012 3:52:06 PM
Europe is certainly not "just as bad" as America, but it is bad. And if you could choose to be born in the US or any of the European countries mentioned, uh, you should obviously not choose America. There are just a lot of difficulties involved in actually changing that once you're lodged there.
2/27/2012 3:54:52 PM
@ His4Life: Sorry you feel compelled to remain a Republican, but I applaud your observation otherwise.
Johnson is to pathetic to deserve a response.
2/27/2012 4:08:46 PM
If it were illegal to lie I think the modern GOP would get arrested at at least twice the rate of the Dems. O3o
2/27/2012 4:09:02 PM
Conservatives wouldn't fall afoul of lying?
Ditto for letting "adults run the country"!
2/27/2012 4:47:13 PM
What radical left wing?
George Johnson's "radical left wing" would be "center right" in most other western nations. The Overton Window in the United States has drifted so far right that Ronald Reagan, darling of the Right, would likely be booed off the stage by the Tea Party if he tried to run today.
The health care reform package that the conservative Republicans wanted in the 90s is being screamed down by the present Republican Party as "socialism" today, only twenty years later. The candidates they're running TODAY solely consist of corporate-fascist theocrats who want government small enough to fit in your bedrooms, and the Chosen One is going to be one of two possible versions of Nehemiah Scudder. It's 2012, and they insist that we need to discuss whether free and open access by women to birth control is appropriate. Our pundits are mumbling about restricting the vote to people who own property, and whether poll taxes and literacy tests REALLY violate our Constitution, and millions of people actually AREN'T shouting them down. Our politicians are treating basic civil rights as privileges which can be recalled as needed. Calls to let the poor and the uninsured with diseases die in the street are actually being met with riotous applause from crowds. Multiple dozens of laws to protect the environment and consumers and to restrict how companies can do business and how big and powerful those companies can get have been repealed or are being so weakened as to be completely meaningless, and various states are in a frantic race to the bottom on everything from corporate tax rates to education funding. Several states are successfully trying to cockblock LABOR UNIONS--you know, those wonderful organizations that are pretty much the entire reason why it's actually possible to get jobs with workplace protections, something vaguely resembling decent pay and some benefits. We just passed a law that lets US citizens be indefinitely incarcerated without trial. Not long before THAT the Supremes voted to allow companies the right to give as much money as they wanted to any politician for pretty much any reason they could think of, because they consider corporations to be people and money to be free speech. Hell, we're debating whether torture is something legally acceptable.
A few states have managed to get some form of legalized gay marriage after years of fighting and our president is a black guy who would STILL be a center-right political and military conservative in the 1980s HERE and would be one in most of the western world NOW. That's it. That's your left. The democrats are only Left compared to Ghengis-fucking-Khan. We're still on track to become the biggest fascist corporate oligarchy in the history of the human race.
So I ask again--WHAT radical left?
2/27/2012 5:57:32 PM
Yes, ignorance really needs violence, doesn't it?
