Quote# 86270

Atheism is especially attractive to several types of people:

Addicts. Atheism teaches that no God will punish their selfish and destructive behavior. Therefore addicts, whether alcohol, drugs, pornography, etc. flock to atheism. This is the typical atheist in Western Europe or English speaking counties. Part of recovery is belief in God.

Communists. Traditional religions might be a threat to totalitarian dictorships, therefore Communists are militant atheists. Additionally, atheism permits everything, including murder. Murder is necessary to carry out the proletarian revolution and maintain the dictatorship of the proletariat.

Scientists. According to atheism prophesy cannot exist and therefore clergymen are unimportant, making scientists society's most important intellectuals. Many scientists have therefore enthusiastically promoted atheism while many young atheists have chosen a career in science. (The 1860 Oxford evolution debate and the 1925 Scopes Trial have become the legendary symbols of scientists triumphing over clergymen.)

In general, atheists are frequently either debauched libertines, murderers or both. Many are psychopaths - remorseless and egocentric [popularly known as "a--holes"].

Mr Blur

You are, truly, an idiot.

Religion can be addictive to several types of fundies:

"Moral" Monsters - people who believe that anything bad they do is forgiven, because they believe in their God, so you're clear to do whatever you want.

Power Addicts - people who wish to control the beliefs of those around them. If you're not praying to the same god, they can't tell you what God says is right and wrong, so they tend to be militant in their beliefs.

Stupid People - self explanatory.

3/2/2012 4:35:44 AM

No, "philosopher", you are the assholes.
And then philosopher was a dickhead.

3/2/2012 4:37:13 AM

I really wonder if these people have ever actually met an atheist.

What the fuck is this shit?

God won't punish destructive behavior. But society does. And the behavior itself is punishing in the long run. So no, not believing in god is not a simple get-out clause.

Atheism itself doesn't permit or forbid anything. Again, society itself does that. And while communism in itself has some good ideas (those that have many should share with those that have not), it just doesn't work. Wait, giving to the poor, where have I heard that?

And the last one is obvious. Of course atheists don't consider the clergy to be special. While an individual atheist may have respect for certain views held by the clergy (like the whole give to the poor thing), they view religion as a whole to be redundant.

Now, given the apparent rise in atheism (or at least, in atheists being open about their non-belief), how has crime fared in general? (Hint: it's kind of sort of going down)

Addict in Recovery

"Part of recovery is belief in God."

When I was in the grip of my addiction, I asked God repeatedly to help me with it, with no result. When I got into recovery, by my own efforts and without the help of any supernatural higher power, almost simultaneously I became an atheist. I have been an atheist in recovery for almost 23 years.

3/2/2012 4:59:12 AM

Typical. Frequently. Many. Learn what these words mean.

Also, frummer boy, how many atheist-led pogroms have there been in the last two millennia?

3/2/2012 5:17:48 AM

Are you retards uncapable of understanding that the only thing atheism "says", is : THERE IS NO GOD?

The rest is up to society.

Religions are a threat to totalitarian dictatorships? That explains "got mitt uns"

3/2/2012 5:34:27 AM

Oh sure, the best thing to do to a recovering addict is to tell them over and over how selfish and disgusting they are and that god stops everything else it does just to look forward to punishing them forever. You know, it's also why god doesn't heal amputees and doesn't end famines, because it's too busy hating that one specific addict.
Because bullying fixes every behaviour and cures every mental illness!!!

3/2/2012 5:35:26 AM

Addicts; indeed, no god will punish them, but they can't ask any god for forgiveness either, they'll have to face up to what they have done right here, right now and live with the knowledge that they have destroyed the one and only life for their wives/husbands, children and other family members.

Communism is first and foremost an economic system, it's not totalitarian in and of itself. But as most people are a bit selfish, it seldom works without rigid control systems. Murder was "necessary" to carry out the American and French revolutions as well, and to (almost) eradicate the Native Americans.

Atheism neither permits nor prohibits murder, it's only a lack of belief in gods.
It's as inane as to say that baldness permits murder.
There IS no "according to atheism", stupid, as there is no doctrine, no slogan, no motto, nothing.
Clergymen can be very useful in soothing the masses and dulling their will to obstruct the comfortable life of the gentry.

Please show us your prison reccord statistics with these huge amounts of atheist murders and psychopaths you're speaking of. Take your time, we'll wait...

[Note: I slightly edited this to fix some things I forgot to change to fit the new text.]

Fundamentalist theism is especially attractive to several types of people:

Addicts. Fundamentalist theism teaches that God will punish them for not being faithful and that works are irrelevant. Therefore addicts, whether alcohol, drugs, pornography, etc. flock to fundamentalist religion. This is the typical fundamentalists in the United States and other English-speaking counties. Part of recovery is thinkinkg rationallly and either becoming a moderate/liberal theist or an atheist.

Fascism. Non-fundie religions and atheism are a threat to totalitarian dictorships, therefore fascists are militant wingnuts. Additionally, fundamentlist theology permits things members of saner sects and the non-religious would seriously disapprove of, including murder. Murder is necessary to carry out the fascist revolution and maintain the dictatorship of the American Taliban.

Anti-science cranks. According to fundamentalist theism some parts of reality cannot exist and therefore clergymen are more important than scientists, making scientists society's less important people when it comes to reality. Many scientists have therefore enthusiastically promoted real science while many young fundamentalists have been indoctrinated into it by their parents. (The 1860 Oxford evolution debate and the 1925 Scopes Trial have become the legendary symbols of scientists triumphing over clergymen.)

In general, fundamentalists are frequently either hateful bigots, murderers (e.g. to the targets of their bigotry; indirect in the case of suicide caused by harrassment over thins like homosexuality or atheism), or both. Many are psychopaths - remorseless and egocentric [popularly known as "assholes"].

Mister Spak

Addicts. Theisms lies convince people that everything theists say is a lie, so they dismiss the 10% truth that is in theism, leading to drug use and addiction.

Communists. Dictators see how theists manipulate people with lies so they do the same thing.

Scientists. Scientists invent the internet where theists can post their claims that science is a big fat failure.

3/2/2012 6:30:33 AM

Addicts: yes, there's no reason for atheists to seek help with addiction, except for lost jobs, broken marriages, declining health, and depression.

Communists: of course totalitarian dictatorships hate religion, they don't like the competition.

Scientists: right, scientific discoveries that have saved countless lives and eased man's burdens have in no way made them more important than dour old men poring over a 2500 year old book for answers.

And yeah, we atheists love killing and whoring, sometimes both at once. Just yesterday I ... no, last month ... no, last year ... no, sometime in the last century ... no ...

3/2/2012 6:37:50 AM

clergymen are unimportant, making scientists society's most important intellectuals

Scientists, doctors and others in medicine figured out the cause and cure of the Black Plague.

The clergy simply prayed while more people died.

Science 1, religion 0.

Scientists, engineers, technicians and a group of brave astronauts took Mankind to the moon.

Religion takes Mankind back to the Dark Ages.

Science 2, religion 0.

Do I need to continue?

3/2/2012 6:38:03 AM

Okay, I can play this game too. Theism appeals to these types of people:

Teabaggers. These unsavory people want people without insurance to die, women to have no rights, Mexicans out of the country, and gays to be the scapegoats for everything.

Morons. Theism is extremely widespread among rednecks, trailer trash, and other stupid people such as Sarah Palin, Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann, and Rick Santorum (who also thinks people going to college makes them snobs).

Fascists. Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco were all theists (as demonstrated by their words and writings) and as long as you do it in the name of God/Jesus/Allah/etc. everything is permitted including blatant lying (as is often seen in the quotes posted here) and even murder (as seen in religion's bloody history).

Clergy. Clergymen would be rather unimportant if theism never existed but with theism they are given political power and influence that they do not deserve.

In general, theists are frequently idiots, self-righteous pricks with an inflated and undeserved sense of importance, murderous fascists or all of the above [also known as cocksucking douchebags].

No one is so radical and uncompromising in their belief as one who is a convert.

3/2/2012 6:49:44 AM

Brendan Rizzo

Um, no.

The majority of atheists are not addicts, murderers, or communists. In fact, in some parts of Western Europe it is considered unusual if you are not an atheist. For instance, in the entire history of this site there has only been a single Norwegian fundie, a single Danish fundie, and no Swedish fundies.

Free thought is a far bigger threat to dictatorships than religion is, as religion explicitly says not to question authority.

What is bad about scientists? They perform a public service. Did you notice that the countries with no scientists are all backwards, Third World, superstitious hellholes?

Go back to the seventeenth century please. Maybe then you will appreciate atheists.

I am an addict communist scientist debauched libertine murderer psychopath and I am proud of it!

3/2/2012 7:10:48 AM

Wow a jewish fundie. You don't see these too often.

3/2/2012 7:26:18 AM

Wait, I'm supposed to be be murdering people? Why didn't I get the memo?

3/2/2012 7:30:57 AM

Doubting Thomas

Actually, you'll find that recovered addicts are more likely to be religious. They just tend to replace drug addiction with God addiction.

Atheism does not permit everything including murder. You obviously don't understand Secular Humanism, which is far more tolerant than any religion.

Scientists tend to come to atheism naturally, since they're trained to think critically. Once you start thinking critically, you see there's no evidence for God.

atheists are frequently either debauched libertines, murderers or both. Many are psychopaths - remorseless and egocentric [popularly known as "a--holes"].

You forgot about the part where we eat babies.

3/2/2012 7:48:22 AM

"Part of recovery is belief in God."

Any cure which involves intellectual dishonesty and self-delusion seems a poor choice. Probably pushed by ones popularly known as a**holes.

3/2/2012 8:49:46 AM

I would have expected Jews to be particularly sensetive and averse to making arguments in which a whole group of people is dehumanised - on the grounds of religion no less - and reviled as inhuman.

I should have known better.

Is it just me or has the bar been lowered somewhat in jewish philosophy circles ?
