the universe or "all of this" did have a cause. It didn't JUST exist. This argument from the skeptic (no need for a cause) is simply the result of not "thinking that deep" or "not thinking entirely".

The ol' double standard: God doesn't need causation, but the universe does.
(*sigh*) You really just cannot argue with such people about this, because they cannot (or WILL not) recognize their faulty logic, no matter how ardently it is pointed out; and what is absolutely maddening about it is that they then smugly assume that this means they win the argument!
Of all the things in the fundie "argument arsenal" that clearly show their need for psychological deprogramming, this has got to be in the top 10.

This is not thinking critically. Skeptics do not deny a cause, they use what is logicaaly sound to find the most valid cause. Th story in Genesis has no evidence to back it up and seems unlikely. The search for knowledge requires looking past fairy tales and mythology and towards what is most probable. It is not that the Bible is thrown out due to bias, it just seems sort of contrived and hoaky.
No, the argument from the skeptic is called the null hypothesis. If you wish to challenge the null hypothesis, you will need evidence to support your assertion. Please note the the following are NOT, by any reasonable means, evidence:
- Pointing to the universe as proof of creation (A proves A)
- Saying "it looks created"
- Saying that lots of people believe it was created (believe it or not, lots of people could be very, very wrong)
- A collection of ancient myths which allege a supernatural (and therefore insubstantial) creation, especially one with numerous contradictions and absurdities
- Personal revelations, as such revelations are only really relevant to the person who received it
Okay, there's your task, have at it!
the universe or "all of this" did have a cause. It didn't JUST exist.
If the alleged cause of the universe can "just exist", then surly so can the universe itself.
Confused?
