If a person were to read anything from a century or more ago, they would be appalled by how much the English language has degraded since then. Sesquipedalian loquaciousness was not seen as a bad thing THEN, goddamnit! In any case, conservatives probably do it because totalitarians in general do it. Both the Nazis and the Soviets were in love with syllabic abbreviations, hence gulag, agitprop, Gestapo, Comintern, Nazi... clearly the conservatives are following in the footsteps of their ideological forebears.

Hey! Don't go knocking portmanteaus and abbreviations. Also, being concise and clear is more important than using flowery language, I think. Hell. Colleges will tell you that; I do believe they tend to emphasize it, actually.
