I believe children who do not receive smacking for their bad behavior grow up to be thin-skinned, candy ass, spoiled leftists.

Actually, it has less to do with the spanking and more to do with the fact that people who don't do things like that tend to be more liberal - and the political opinion of the parents has some effect on the political development of their children. (Though it can go both ways, both into the same direction as well as in the oposite one)
But lets not confuse them kidbeaters with things as complxe as that.
Oh, shit. My parents actually treated me with love, so I must be a thin-skinned, candy ass, spoiled leftist.
I got smacked with a wooden spoon by my mom a few times when I was in early elementary school. And my dad swatted me a few times too.
it wasn't particularly traumatic, but then it didn't happen all that often, only on a few occasions. I rather strongly disapprove of spanking as a routine method of punishment for children.
I happen to be a leftist.
Those who do receive smackings grow up to be snippy, whiny, spoiled fundies.
I have never understood why you want to hit a child, to teach it (among other things) to never hit those that are smaller than you.
If a child can't understand reasoning, it definitely can't understand why mummy is cooing one moment and causing pain the next.
Praising good behavior and ignoring the child when it does the wrong things works fine for most normal, non-abusive people.
I was spanked maybe twice during my childhood (although looking back I probably deserved more) my parents were caring people, so caring that they only resorted to physical punishment those two times. But I'm not traumatized because of that.
What annoys me is the uber hardcore liberals that think touching your child when you are a angry is grounds for jail time, and I mean touching as in just putting your hand on their shoulder while you yell not punching in the face.
Now don't think I'm some Right-wing, fundie, moron posing here advocating beating kids, because I am an atheist, I think that is a horrible thing to do to anyone, much less your child. But I think it's where I grew up in the south where the population is 30 republicans for every 1 democrat that makes me think that maybe giving a kid a little smack on the butt when they do something extremely bad such as run away and hid from you in the crowded mall (the only reason I was ever spanked) isn't such a horrid thing.
"Because beating them will produce the next generation of Mansons and Dahmers- and if I'm lucky, we might even get an Albert Fish out of the brood!"
Is that what you were going to say next?
I believe a light spanking is okay, but only to teach a lesson, and only under certain conditions:
- Very young children/babies CANNOT understand why they are being spanked;
- Ten year olds and upwards know that what they're doing is wrong, so there's no point;
- Any spanking should only be given if the child has repeatedly disobeyed you and is actually endangering themselves or someone else;
- Children with learning disabilities probably won't be able to understand that they've done wrong for longer (if ever), so don't spank them.
"I believe children who do not receive smacking for their bad behavior grow up to be thin-skinned, candy ass, spoiled leftists."
Compared to, say, children who receive the death penalty by lethal injection for bad behaviour - specifically bombing the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City in 1995, murdering 168 innocent people, including 19 children - despite no doubt being smacked in the past, and growing up to be a 'thick-skinned tough guy unspoiled right-wing Fundamental ist Christian'.
Amirite?
In all the twelve years I knew my father, he never so much as raised his voice to me, never mind his hand. Yet, I haven't so much as hit anyone else, as I've never had reason to, least of all so much as contemplated the notion of even thought of committing a terrorist act, such are my Humanist morals as an Atheist.
Anon-e-moose. Timothy McVeigh. One of these things is not like the other. Which is it, Wolfcounsel?
thin-skinned, candy ass, spoiled leftists.
OK, we have a country where the only two represented political parties are center-right and far-right, where everyone who's so much as a centrist has mainstream politicians literally demanding their death ...and you think a "thin-skinned" Leftist is actually going to survive? Dude, considering how quick the Right is to take mortal offense at any suggestion that they're morally, ethically and intellectually bankrupt (which they are)...
What is this, The Rock fundie-style?
The children will be thin-skinned, rudey-poo, candy-ass, jabronis?
I was beaten, forced to self-harm, verbally abused, burned with cigarettes, put in a sweatbox to dehydrate, subjected to sensory deprivation, publically humiliated, and told every day that I was a worthless piece of trash who only had a place in the house - the very world even - at the pleasure of my betters.
Even on my best behaviour, lest I get too complacent and start thinking I was ever safe just because I was obedient.
I am an incredibly resilient leftist and all around stubborn bastard while your ideal role model who put me through all that fell to pieces at the word "no" before downing a bottle of pills when it was time for his own knuckles to get rapped.
What else do you believe in? Leprechauns?
The most brittle, thin-skinned and easily offended people I know are conservatives.
They're offended when anyone suggests that maybe mentally ill people, felons and people with known problems controlling their anger and violent impulses shouldn't be allowed to own firearms. They're offended by loving couples who happen to be of the same sex. They're offended by the notion that they have to politely share space with people of different colors, religion or ethnicities, or that those people are to be accorded the same rights and privileges that they get. They're offended by the fact that we refuse to reorganize our society according to the tenets of the bronze-age religion they follow, and recriminalize harmless activities that bother them.
And they bitch. They whine and complain, they bitch and moan, they rant and scream about it. They bitch about how unfair it is that no one is pandering to them 24-7, about how persecuted they are, how horrible it is that Those People are getting the benefits that rightly should be going only to THEM. And they're 'terrified of their own shadows to boot.
@#1917780: holy shit.
I'm glad you're okay.
I was beaten. My brother was beaten. Somehow, I turned out to be a socialist and my brother is a conservative. Hmm, I'm starting to suspect that people's political positions are the result of our adult thought and reflection.
Confused?
