[In response to an article by an atheist nurse in the military]

You shouldn't be in this field. Go to any other field where you are not caring for humans. Especially since you are purportedly in the United States military, defending a nation under God.

PROTIP: "Under God" was added to the pledge in 1954.

It was a response to the Red Panic of that time.

Frankly, I don't care when one believes, as long as they do what they are supposed to do...you know, like medical workers do?

I'd rather have a nurse that believes this is the one chance at life we get, who knows that she's responsible for my wellbeing, than a nurse who places the whole case in the hands of God, and comforts me by saying that I will be in Heaven with my Father soon.

I love it when religious fundamentalism combines with militaristic fundamentalism.

"The military is the highest calling, and all those who are a part of it are to be given the greatest reverence. Except if they're dirty godless heathens, then fuck them."

Wow. What a hatefilled country the US has become

Mister Spak

You shouldn't be in this country. Go to Iran where god runs the country and there are no gays.

3/27/2012 5:10:13 AM

OK. Shan't give you anything for the pain then. Next!

3/27/2012 5:13:18 AM

Yes, atheists cannot care for humans. Of course not. Why would we even understand the basics of empathy? We don't have Jesus to guide us.

What monsters does he think we are? As Dawkins so rightly points out: this sort of comments proves more about Kathleen than about me.

"You shouldn't be in this field" as the cow said to the sheep.

I can't but help wonder how they'd take a Christian nurse expositing on dealing with Sikh patients' spiritual needs (pun intended).

So you'd rather that soldiers die at understaffed bases than to have a "dirty atheist" there? You're a moron. I don't care if the person caring for me believes in the Great Green Arkleseizure as long as they know how to practice medicine. Then again, I'm not a fucking bigot.

@loki

Wow. What a hatefilled country the US has become

Years ago I'd defend the US against such an accusation but with the advent and popularity of insane Tea Party conservatism (which in itself is the unholy merger of racism, religious fundamentalism, and vulture capitalism) and I really don't think I can. My only defense is that not everyone is like that and many of us hate what the Teapers are trying to turn this country into.

they are like a four year old that keeps shouting "MINE!: in a grocery store arent they? almost like people will start listening to them just because they are loud and annoying.

"this is a nation under god! THIS IS A NATION UNDER GOD!" "well, actually nowhere in the-" "LALALALALALA! I CANT HEAR YOU! THIS IS ONE NATION UNDER GOD!!!!!!!!"

Yeah, 'cause only True Christians can really care for humans.

"the United States military, defending a nation under God."

(*Switches to 'Smartarse' mode*)

What about those in WWII?:

Pledge of Allegiance:

'I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all.'

1924 - 1954.

And even what they were paid with?:

The 1952 issue $5 note.

When you see it - or don't - you'll shit bricks, 2012Kathleen.

...what, purportedly they didn't care enough about a 'God', yet they - along with the rest of the Allies - won WWII, is that what you're 'purporting' to say? In that case, you said it, I didn't.

Those - who fought & died in WWII - defending not just a nation, but the idea which it represented: Freedom cared. Too much for the likes of you, that's for sure...:

Hitler was a Christian. And a right-winger. [/Reverse Godwin]

@Nerikull

And even said pre-Red Scare Pledge (1924 - 1954; as above) is still valid to this day. They can't touch you for it, not even the courts.

I'd rather have a nurse that will give me my meds than pray for me.

Burning Stake

Last year, I became a Certified Medical Assistant. I'll remember your comments if I'm ever in the military and you are screaming for help; I'll have to say, "Sorry, I'm agnostic" and leave you to bleed to death while I try to find a "true patriot" to treat you.

...Okay, not really. I think that would be worse to leave you to die even though I disagree with you.

But you see my point, right?

Give me an atheist health care worker anytime over a God-loving moron. At least I know they won't waste their time praying to a on-existent entity to save my life, they'll use science-proven medicine.

Tell me a good reason to abandon a 15 year career over a disagreement of some random moron on the internet.

Very nice. Someone wants to voluntarily save the lives of people who serve in the armed forces, and you tell them to fuck off because they don't believe what you believe. Buddy this a free nation founded on a secular government. Everyone can serve in the army. Why not, half of their taxes end up going to damn thing anyway.

I wouldn't care who or what my carers believed in unless I was stricken with either a severe case of short-limb or suffered a serious bout of demon infestation.

I wonder what happens when Kathleen get an atheist (or non-Christian) patient.

3/27/2012 11:16:17 AM

That's right, Kathleen, tell someone who cares for the sick and risks her own life to save the lives of others to stop doing so. I'm sure that's what Jesus would want. Oh, wait....
