Quote# 86723
In all my exchanges with unbelievers, I'm always amazed at how much they act like they care for logic and reason. Anyway, Instead of writing a bunch words that might put you to sleep I will make this a little more entertaining:
A: You don't understand reason.
C: How do you know?
A: Because you don't understand Logic
C: How do you know?
A: Because you don't understand reason.
C: Ok, what's reason?
A: It's our only means of knowledge.
C: How about Logic?
A: Logic is our guiding principle.
C: Ok, so all knowledge is based on logic and reason?
A: Yes
C: How about that statement?
A: What do you mean?
C: Is the statement "All knowledge is based on logic and reason" based on logic and reason?
A: Yes.
C: Ok, well now your begging the question.
A: How?
C: Because you are relying on logic and reason to prove logic and reason.
A: Silence
C: Anyway, how do you know that you reason correctly?
A: I compare my reasons to the others.
C: How do you know they reason correctly?
A: Silence
C: How do you define Logic?
A: Logic is the guiding principle of the mind.
C: Is everybody Logical?
A: No
C: But you just said logic guides our minds?
A: Well, some people choose not to be lead by logic.
C: Why?
A: I don't know.
C: How do you know your logical?
A: Silence
End.

This proves that arguing with a fundie is like arguing with a five year old.

C: Is the statement "All knowledge is based on logic and reason" based on logic and reason?
A: Yes.
No. The statement "All knowledge is based on logic and reason" is merely a premise.

TheJebus: without my glasses, and out of the corner of my eye, I thought you said, "This proves that arguing with a fundie is like arguing with a pile of liver".
That's called, "serendipity".

The irony here is that you're trying (and failing) to use logic and reason to prove that logic and reason are useless. Which makes no sense.

Or maybe they just get quiet because they realize that either you're deliberately being obtuse or you're literally incapable of being reasoned with. I would have realized this and stopped engaging with you when you asked "Ok, what's reason?"
Whether you realize it or not, you're trying to use logic to explain why logic is bad; one cannot engage in debate without at least attempting to use logic and reason—no matter how pitiful the attempt—and you certainly cannot engage in intelligent or constructive debate without at least somewhat successfully using it.

Strawmen are so much easier to beat up.

Though he managed to pull it out by cheating an declaring the debate over, Hez came perilously close to getting beaten up by his own straw man. Now that's talent.

Immanuel Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason": do yourself a favour and read it, you pretentious moron.

Classic Frankenstein scenario
Hez has cobbled together a strawman out of dead arguments, given it life and watched in horror as it lays waste to all he loves, finally killing him.
The moral? It's dangerous to re-animate arguments you don't understand

In all the mind-numbing stupidity of your argument you still haven't made your case for the existence of god.
Where is your proof?

I can handle this.
Reason is a dynamic, context-sensitive means of decision making. Everyone uses reason, although quality varies. Logic is the way you break things down. Logic is a subset of reason that describes the details of our reasoning. Logic is not concrete, necessarily. Logic can be generic and abstract. Logic is all about rules.
You wouldn't make a very good programmer/software developer, Hezekiah.
To recap:
Reason = generic statement of why
Logic = the details of reason

"Logic is the guiding principle of the mind. "
uh no, logic is the study of valid reasoning. i love how leading this is though, it proves that this person doesn't understand logic.
if logic was the guiding principle of the mind, you wouldn't need to bloody learn it, it would come naturally.
anyone who believes "All knowledge is based on logic and reason." is an idiot or clueless, sound knowledge or useful knowledge may be based on logic and reason, but there is plenty of knowledge that isn't based on either.
like the knowledge i like ice cream, or that fish swim upstream every spring, neither are logical or reasonable, but they are knowledge.

Modern scientists are not ancient Greeks, nor solipsists. We actually accept what we see and touch, in addition to logical deduction. It works better, really.
