Quote# 86917

“If atheism is so liberating and enlightening why are so many of them foul mouthed, intolerant, violent, and generally lacking in human virtues?”

Atheism is not liberating and enlightening because it is tied to the stale old science of the 19th century. Modern science is revealing that the things we take for granted, such as time and space, are mere approximations of something far more profound. They are not the bedrock of reality as atheists would have us believe. Atheists are fighting a losing battle and they know it. Science which was their close friend is now their bitter enemy, and in their desperation they are striking out wildly at the Church and the Holy Father.

It is important that we understand that the findings of modern science are increasingly rendering atheism obsolete. As the rational foundations of atheism crumble, all that remains is a violent rage directed against the softest of targets –the Catholic Church.

If atheists, agnostics, and freethinkers generally are becoming increasingly foulmouthed, intolerant, and violent, it's from people like you constantly trying to cram your superstitious bigotry down our throats.

I've been encountering this kind of argument a lot recently. That advances in our understanding of the nature and size of the universe, with regard to space and time, are somehow indicative of some sort of spirituality, or even that they are somehow related to God, or even the specific Christian God. I had a long argument with someone who claimed that quantum physics was somehow related to Jesus.
Also, lol at the Catholic church being "the softest of targets". I think the Amish, or the Jains, are a lot softer.

I'm calling poe on this. Does any cathoholic think the church is weak or soft?

Or, maybe they just see a "lack of human virtues" in a so-called Holy Father who tried to protect child molesters by hiding their work records from police, and who goes to impoverished third world countries where HIV/AIDS is epidemic, and tells them they can't wear condoms.

4/15/2012 3:53:47 AM

@Lpopman

Probably the frequently encountered "I'm so oppressed"-stance, that some chrisitians in societies with christian majority display.

Yep, in the year 1900 the stale old science of the previous century became worthless. Maxwell's equations stopped working, force stopped equalling mass times acceleration, all chemistry up until then went out with the garbage, and all evidence for evolution retroactively erased itself from time.

Sheesh, where did this meme come from? Nearly all modern atheists respect science-the-process, and modern mind-bending theories of science-as-a-body-of-knowledge provoke awe and delight not fear.

Interesting.... a post that looks completely coherent due to its lack of Caps Lock and correct spelling and grammar in general. And yet, still makes 100% no sense.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the phrase "something more profound". With each scientific discovery or breakthrough, more questions arise. That much is true. But at the same time, there is less and less out there that can't be explained by natural phenomena. This is commonly called the "god of the gaps". These gaps have been getting smaller and smaller since at least the time of Galileo.

Sure, there are profound things out there we don't quite understand yet. That doesn't make them supernatural and we don't need religion for them. Science and philosophy seem to be doing a good job on their own.

Extraintrovert

No scientific discovery or theoretical framework makes any statement, one way or another, on the existence or non-existence of any deity. That is because these things are non-falsifiable, and therefore useless bullshit.

Also, even if every atheist everywhere was the most disgusting bastard imaginable, that wouldn't automatically make them wrong. If that was how knowledge worked, then the Catholic Church would be - retroactively, now and forever - wrong about absolutely everything any member of it says on anything.

Because you make us that way in your fantasys.
Try looking past your own propaganda.

In real life we are polite, freindly, and more than just "tolerant"... we are open minded, and accepting. I dont see packs of atheists picketing funerals with hatefull banners. I dont hear atheists calling for the exclusion of out-groups from communitys.
Atheists dont have powerfull organizations that influence governments, nor do we protect peadophiles from justice. We leave that sort of vileness to you folks in the catholic church (which BTW has it's own frikking army).

Hey, if it makes you feel better, we go after fundammentalist Protestants more. At least the Catholic Church accepts evolution and thus isn't among the sects trying to get fairy tales in science class.

The foundations of atheism (which you erroneously equate with science) are crumbling?

Dude, do some research, and prepare yourself for a shock.

Uh, my mother's family is overwhelmingly Catholic, and not once has my Atheist father 'raged' at them. Probably because they haven't raged at him.

I find you very hard to take seriously. Mostly because you don't seem to know what the hell you're talking about, but also because you probably believe this shit whole heartily.

"It is important that we understand that the findings of modern science are increasingly rendering atheism obsolete."

Oh, of course they are. I mean, it's not like all that science is pointing to an uncreated, unguided, and uncaring universe or anything.

"As the rational foundations of atheism crumble, all that remains is a violent rage directed against the softest of targets –the Catholic Church."

The Catholic Church is a "soft target" to you?

This is funny.

Christians, who are the definition of crass (misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc.), violent to the point of being bloodthirsty, and completely lack any semblance of humanity, declare that anyone is foul-mouthed, intolerant, violent, and generally lacking in human virtues? Their hypocrisy and DARVO strategy never cease to amuse.

I'd rather cling to 19th century ideas than fourth century ideas. Science is still our close friend. to my knowledge, no major, legitimate evidence has been found to discredit evolution, and this, to the fury of christians, only works to discredit your superstition.

Atheism is liberating, in the sense that you don't have to follow century-old dogma any longer. You just follow common sense and the Golden Rule.
If we are foul-mouthed, it's because we have been attacked by fundamentalists and are defending ourselves verbally instead of physically.
In what way is Science our bitter enemy, and in what way is atheism rendered obsolete? If anything, religion is more and more obsolete.

What rational foundations of atheism has been crumbling? Is the Earth suddenly seen as the center of the Universe again? Is it really Thor who is responsible for thunder and lightning? Can daughters really be born out of their father's forehead, dressed for battle?

Our violent rage towards the Catholic Church (if there is any) is due to its protection of pedophile priests and monks, the way it influences people in HIV-infested countries to not use condoms. Things like that.

We're intolerant? Yeah right! When anyone in my family or any of my friends come out with the information that he or she is gay I gladly incorporate that fact in the picture I have of that person, and I don't treat him or her differently (with the exception that I tease him/her about people of the same gender from then on). I have friends of many different religions and ethnicities, no fundamentalists though. I'm against violence of all kinds; wars, death penalties, corporal punishments, boxing, child abuse, etc.

The softest of targets must have been Mohandas Gandhi and his followers, who stood unarmed against their attackers and let themselves be mowed down. Then the next row moved forward, and the next, and the next.

"Won't someone think of the child-rapists?"

Whargarbling post-newtonian science won't help you.
Atheists, like other people, are subject to conformism and social pressure. Education is, luckily, turning more and more people away from childish superstitions, and atheists are now a large enough group to speak their mind openly.
Moreover, the same trends mean that religion is increasingly found only in the very ignorant, very close minded, or very stupid; expect to lose further credibility and social standing. Religion's model of one relatively cultured man preaching to a bunch of illiterates -which is actually closer to catholicism than protestantism- can only stand while ignorance reigns.

God of the Gaps argument. That's all that spew was. Half of them claim science is proving Gods existance and the other half is claiming science is hiding such proof. Both are wrong and both will never supply anything but the assertion.
