[From "The Truth about Harry Potter!!"]

It's just fantasy; witchcraft isn't real.

Wiccan (witchcraft) is a legally recognized religion by the IRS and the US military. (Yes, the schools and libraries are pushing a religion by promoting Potter!) A local Wiccan has said that the practices shown are consistent with real witchcraft. In an abcNews.com interview, a practicing witch said the Potter books would help "change the way people feel about [witches]." Witches themselves say there is indeed power in witchcraft - and God agrees with them! The power isn't in being able to have chairs fly across the room - the power is in what it does to your soul. The question is, what is the source of that power? God says Satan is the true source of that power. Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour - 1 Peter 5:8

If Harry Potter is Satanic, Satan is pretty damn lame.

Mister Spak

What about the Force? The Force can make chairs fly across the room. It can also choke you to death by remote control. Leet's see your god do that!

Who needs driving schools? Just go watch a few James Bond movies and you're instantly qualified to do even trickiest and most explosive car chases. Right?

Stuff being shown in fiction != comprehensive education about the stuff. People get exposed to plot elements all the time. Doesn't create too many experts on the subjects.

In America, fair country, where the folks are so stupid,
there once was a man named Steven Blankenship.
He maintained a website, where he spouted his bullshit,
crying "Whatever I don't like is Satanic lies!"

Satanic lies, Satanic lies, whatever he hates he says is Satanic.

He was a fearmonger, and that was no wonder.
All of his coreligionists were fearmongers, too.
He maintained a website, where he spouted his bullshit,
crying "Whatever I don't like is Satanic lies!"

He lived miserably, 'cause no one believed him,
because what he said was such obvious crap.
For he was a fearmonger, but that was no longer,
for it's hard to do so when no one falls for it.

Satanic lies, Satanic lies, he blamed this on a bunch of Satanic lies.

The power isn't in being able to have chairs fly across the room - the power is in what it does to your soul.

Then that's no power at all.

You didn't bother to get a name for us did you?

Take a tip from His-4-Life. If you're going to make up lies, at least make them entertaining.

Even assuming that Harry Potter is a Wiccan, so what? How is it a violation of church/state separation or constitute "pushing" Wicca to simply have a Wiccan character in a fantasy book? Should we remove all books that happy to have Christian heroes, too? Unless schools are teaching Harry Potter as fact and having Harry Potter magic classes (and not as a fun diversion but as a serious area of study) I don't see how this can be seen as pushing religion in school.

Yes, the schools and libraries are pushing a religion by promoting Potter!

My school library had copies of the bible, so I think that evens it out.

A local Wiccan has said that the practices shown are consistent with real witchcraft.

Bullshit. Doesn't matter anyway, since it's all made up nonsense.

I'm confident that the majority of Christians - and the religious in general - are for the most part capable of differentiating reality from fantasy. You might want to ask one of them how to do that.

Wicca and witchcraft are religions. Harry Potter is a series of fiction books written by an english author.

Harry Potter != Wiccan.

*facepalm*
Is it me, are are the fundies gradually getting more stupid?

OF COURSE it's just fantasy. That is what the genre Fantasy is all about, stupid!

There is power in believing in yourself, in trusting your friends and working together, yes.
What is so devilish about that?

I don't know who you were talking to, but I'm pretty sure that Wiccan ceremonies are not done using pseudo-Latinized English.

I'm pretty sure this guy's a poe. None of these arguments are new.

That said, these claims and the rest from this guy's site have been made in all seriousness by some people.

Were JK Rowling Wiccan, you might have a leg to stand on. A very feeble leg, but at least it would be something. Of course, Rowling is not Wiccan.

And anyway, the Wiccan Rede is as follows: "An it harm none, do what ye will". How very... satanic.

Then there's the Rule of Three - whatever energy you put into the world, positive or negative, will come back to you threefold. No wonder you're afraid of Wiccans, Mr. Blankenship, I'd fear being on the receiving end of three times your bullshit too.

You're thinking of Charmed, not Harry Potter.

Wicca is not about Satan or satanic worship, you moron.
As for Harry Potter, it's kids fantasy fiction. Not that I would expect idiots who believe demons and spells are real to know the difference.

Who knew Wiccan religious ceremonies involved terrible Latin puns?

*headdesk*

WICCA IS A RELIGION. WITCHCRAFT IS NOT A RELIGION. WHEN WILL PEOPLE GET IT STRAIGHT?

A local Wiccan has said that the practices shown are consistent with real witchcraft.

Either they're cherry-picking what this person actually said, or they picked one helluva fluffy bunny.

Witches themselves say there is indeed power in witchcraft - and God agrees with them!

Odin can do you one better - he occasionally dabbles in witchcraft (specifically, seidh).

In Harry Potter, wizardry is essentially a superpower that a small amount of people have. Apart from herbs and astrology (and even those are fictionalized) the majority of stuff in Harry Potter isn't consistent with real witchcraft. Spells are more like prayers, not like instant actions.

I want the source for this "local Wiccan," but then I know you made her up because even the worst of fluff bunnies don't think you can actually wave a wand and make something happen right away.

It's just you. They're getting fucking idiotic at a exponential rate of decrease (to their collective IQ).

I really hope Rowling takes legal offense here.

Sorry, Steve, my roaring lions all seem to be after Purina, 9-Lives, milk, cream, and the odd bit of ground beef. They don't seem to find my soul appetizing at all.
