the interesting thing about that study was that born-agains and atheists actually had about the same levels of hippocampal atrophy (everyone's hippocampus gets smaller as they age - the study was assessing the degree, not the occurrence). people with moderate levels of religiosity seemed to fare better.
but it's just one study.
also, i'm pretty sure what barb is referring to with "anti-semitism" is "any criticism of israel."

We should realize that it isn't that believing in God has crippled their brains, but rather that a crippled brain results in God-worship, particularly of the "born-again" variety. Perhaps.
Or perhaps you do, and God has nothing whatsoever to do with it. Perhaps YOU make the decision to stop learning anything about yourself and the world you live in, and your brain is physically suffering for it. Perhaps you and you alone made the decision to close your mind off completely from the world you live in and refuse to think or question what your pastors tell you the Bible says. Perhaps YOU made the decision all by yourself to ignore observable reality. And you know, maybe you're happier that way.
But don't blame anyone else for not wanting to be like you.

No its not the Biblical God shutting down parts of your mind it's just your unwillingness to learn, reason, and to accept logic that people themselves are responsible for the evil and harm they cause and should take better care of the world and other people in it for a better way of living.
Go take your close mindedness ignorance somewhere else please and leave the logic and reason to those of us who are logical reasonable people who can rationalize without blaming some entity or another for lack of intelligence such as you do.
If the Biblical God were real I doubt he'd want to restrict your brain and function in such a way to cause you foaming at the mouth and smoking out the ears and rather would want the best for you and for you to learn and be open minded instead of a belligerent pedantic raving fool.

BarbT, you ought realize your shrinking brain - if said study is legit - would also affect your ability to remember and comprehend everything you read in your own Bible. As it progresses you'd need constant reminders of passages you used to know by heart and will have a hard time trying to understand what they mean to you in an academic or metaphysical sense and you'll resort to just parroting the interpretation of the largest group you feel comfortable with, leaving yourself open to manipulation via a faith you no longer actually think about or try to understand. I don't mean in a doubting, questioning, sort of way I mean you will look at the pages and draw a total fucking blank until somebody claiming to be holier than you tells you what the gist of it is and you won't have the capacity to judge for yourself if that was actually true. Jesus will be sad that you stopped thinking about him and you'll probably get tricked into voting for a dictator with disturbing 'solutions' to all your problems. Including problems you don't have and problems that arose from the 'solution' they pushed you into.

Ah...so it's in later life! I'm not religious...I strive to be spiritual instead (There is a HUGE difference...spirituality is SO much better!)
On another note, what the hell is wrong with the green movement?! I'm a Christian (not a fundie though) and I see nothing anti-God in the green movement! Gee, here I was thinking that taking care of the Earth (the place GOD gave us to live in) would be a GOOD thing...oops, my bad!
