[Arabic is being taught as an optional course in a NYC school.]
Is the ACLU paying attention? To study Arabic is to study Islam. I don’t particularly care if one studies Arabic, but this level of religious association would be enough to get a Christian study thrown out.
You can’t speak conversational Arabic without invoking the name Allah in every other sentence.
From Wikipedia:
“Some Muslims present a monogenesis of languages and claim that the Arabic language was the language revealed by God for the benefit of mankind and the original language as a prototype symbolic system of communication, based upon its system of triconsonantal roots, spoken by man from which all other languages were derived, having first been corrupted.”

Yeah, because we shouldn't have any need to know what Muslims -- be they terrorists or trading partners or just plain people -- are, you know, saying.
But if English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for you, right?
You can speak Arabic all day without saying Allah. It's not like Arabics some metaphoric language born of the Quaron, idiot.
This from Moonbattery site yet, as fundie as can be and never off the topic of demons, and very much of the "KJV is in God's language" crowd.
Congratulations for once more returning unscathed from a venture into Moonfront Republic, Rabbit.
I recall when there were people who thought studying Russian would turn you into a Communist, too.
Sure. And I can't study Italian without becoming a Catholic, or Hindi without becoming a Hindu, or Chinese without becoming a Taoist, or Ancient Greek without worshipping almighty Zeus.
@Mudak
"But if English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for you, right?"
Ah but Jesus spoke 17th century English. Alan speaks a modern dialect, Fundy English" or "Bullshittish". Actually he disguises it with correct grammar and spelling, but the content is unmistakeable.
You can’t speak conversational Arabic without invoking the name Allah in every other sentence.
I'm pretty sure that you can carry on a normal conversation in Arabic without mentioning Allah. Considering how religious correctness is serious business in the Middle East, you'd have to be able to. Not that the use of Allah is all that indicative, because it is the Arab word for God, just as Deus is Latin for God, and even our word God is Germanic for God (singular). And let's not even mention Yehovah-

- And how would you know that? Have you been studying Arabic? STONE THE HERETIC! IF ENGLISH WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR JESUS ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU!
Everyone knows that the Bible was written by God in King James's time in a quaint and mock-antique version of English.
Idiotic! And so is the contention that to study Arabic is to study Islam.
And to study the sub-dialect of standard English that is generally pronounced Amur'c'n makes one an American.
Also, if you study Mandarin (Chinese) you get slitty eyes (thanks Your Royal Highness, Prince Phillip), and live only on rice.
I studied and speak a Scandinavian language, therefore I am a Norwegian. Oh wait, I also speak French, so I must be French etc....
As to the quote from Wiki, it advances the argument of this Moonbat not one whit! Many Semitic languages are based on tri-literal roots, including Hebrew - a not so distant relation of Arabic.
Hiberno-English has brought across many blessings and religious invocations from Irish Gaelic. Presumably that makes English speakers potentially Irish and Roman Catholics to boot!
I think that my sarcastic reductio ad absurdam should make the point.
Adolf Hitler, circa 1923:
Is the state paying attention? To study Hebrew is to study Jewry. You can't speak Hebrew without invoking the name of the Christ-killers in every sentence. The Jew claims that Hebrew was the language given to Adam by God in the garden of Eden.
Fixed it for you.
"Is the ACLU paying attention? To study Arabic is to study Islam."
I had no idea I worshipped ancient Anglo-Saxon & Celtic deities.
So, everyone who knows Hebrew is automatically Jewish?
If I learned Japanese, whould that automatically make me Shinto?
Learning any Romance language is to study Christianity -particularly if also learning the literature of that language. I don't see many English courses getting thrown out. and, of course, they're not for much the same reason. This whole line of thought is totally bonkers.
I invoke the name God every now and again. I don't believe in any gods, it's just old habit.
That citation can be said about Christians and Latin/Greek/Hebrew too, ya know...
Like, oh my God, you can't speak conversational English without invoking the name of the Christian deity in every other sentence. Jesus Christ, is the ACLU paying attention?
To study Arabic is to study Islam.
CleverScreenName is right. When I took classes in Arabic at the university, we stuck to newspaper articles and the like. But for those who were really *studying* Arabic, that subject was basically tantamount to Islamic Studies. This of course doesn't mean that those students became Muslims, but, yes, it's nearly impossible to deal with Arabic without tripping over Islam left, right, and center.
Now, on the same note, if you want to study Renaissance Art, it's impossible to do it without Christianity. The same goes for Early Modern literature: almost all of it is about Christianity in some shape or form.
However, this brings us to a big *so fucking what?*
I can be an expert on Shakespeare without becoming an Elizabethan minstrel who runs around in tights and bows down to a monarch. The same goes for Arabic. As long as I don't run around saying "la 'ilah 'illa-llahi ..."
I'm not sure how people learning a language violates your civil rights, but I'm sure in your batshit bizarro fucked-up brain, it makes some kind of sense.
I can see it now:
*ACLU agent hops out of the black helicopter to knock on your door"
ACLU Agent: "Excuse me, Alan, but we hear that you're completely butthurt that kids are learning a different language so we're here to raise some hell!"
*Alan rushes up to answer the door from his mom's basement in a mustard-stained Bobba Fet t-shirt"
Alan: "Uh yeah, let me just clean up here" *hides his sock*
Not all Arabs are Muslims, dumbass. There are plenty of Arab Christians as well. And guess what? Arab Christians say "Allah" as well because the literal translation is "the God." It's a literal translation! Claiming Allah and God are not the same being is like if you claimed Hispanic Christians worship a false god named Dios and French and French-Canadian Christians worshiped a false god named Dieu.
"To study Arabic is to study Islam". Nope. You get Arabic-speaking Christians.
And, please note the very next sentence of that Wikipedia article: "Statements spread in later centuries regarding the Arabic language being the language of Paradise are not considered authentic according to the scholars of Hadith and are widely discredited."
Just like how you can't speak German without worshipping the Fuhrer, Norweigan without becomine intimately involved in Astaru Wodenism, or learn how to read Japanese and avoid becoming bound by the code of Bushido and performing Shinto rituals every day.
Oh, wait. Language hasn't got a fucking thing to do with any of that shit.
Knowing Latin doesn't make you Catholic and speaking English doesn't make you a Christian Protestant. Speaking 'Moonbat' on the other hand requires you to abandon all sense and sanity.
Yes, and learning to speak Chinese converts you to Buddhism. It has nothing to do with the fact that learning a foreign language could have possible and likely future advantages in a global era, no, that couldn't be it.
@Reynardine: ...EH?! They did know that Communism was much younger than Russia, yes?
{sigh} First the dictates of only going to the KJV, now this. Where do people get the idea that languages are innately sorcerous?!
So since Roman Catholics use Latin, the ACLU should sue to stop teaching that, too?
Some Muslims present a monogenesis of languages and claim that the Arabic language was the language revealed by God for the benefit of mankind
Some Jews make the same claim about Hebrew. And some Baptists claim they were the original Christians and Freemasons claim to trace their heritage back to the builders of the pyramids. So what? Any fool can make a foolish claim.
Yeah, the community college in my old home town in Illinois taught LOTS of languages, Arabic being just one of them.
And you know what? Knowledge is power!
"You can’t speak conversational Arabic without invoking the name Allah in every other sentence."
Are you out of your fucking mind? First off, Arabic is a language, not a religion. Secondly, "Allah" is just the Arabic word for "god". Christians who speak Arabic use the word as well.
No, Alan...Arabic is a *language*, Islam is a *religion*. The two are not the same.
Stop me if this is getting too complicated for you...
"Is the ACLU paying attention? To study Arabic is to study Islam."
Are you insane?
"I don’t particularly care if one studies Arabic, but this level of religious association would be enough to get a Christian study thrown out."
Never mind. Ignore that previous question. You are insane.
"You can’t speak conversational Arabic without invoking the name Allah in every other sentence.

And that Wikipedia cite is supposed to what, support your absurd claim?
Then you must must never, ever use the numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0 again, Alan.
I'm a pedophile, and I believe English is the ideal language for child enticement.
Therefore, all English speakers are pedophiles.
Yeah. No. It's not.
First of all, using Wikipedia as a source=laughable.
Second of all, I'm pretty sure that the first time Arabic was written down was in order to write the Koran, but it existed as a spoken language before that. Then again, I could be wrong. This isn't my area of expertise.
Third of all, GTFO with your islamophobia. I really hope you file a complaint with the ACLU (or however it works) and they laugh in your fucking face. Damn, this is like listening to my cunty uncle last weekend go on about this bullshit and be like "Is BOMB the first word those kids are going to learn?" and then laugh like that was the funniest fucking joke ever.
This is like saying that to learn Latin is to be indoctrinated by Roman Catholicism. Congrats, you're a complete and total xenophobic idiot.
Wow! I didn't know that Christianity was...you know....an actual LANGUAGE as Arabic is. Then again, "Christians" invoke the name of God in every other sentence...so maybe it is to "Christians". Please note: I say "Christians" rather than Christians since true Christians have no need to disparage or demonize other faiths.
@Renon No, learning Sanskrit makes you a Buddhist. Learning Chinese converts you to Confucianism. Learning Japanese has varied results; you could end up a Zen Buddhist, a Shintoist, or a combination of both; likewise learning Hindi makes you a Hindu, learning Hebrew or Yiddish makes you Jewish, etc.
Everyone knows that the point of the ACLU is to be a boogeyman for right-wing fucktards like yourself.
Also, what the hell is wrong with learning about other cultures? Oh, wait, they're not AMURKIN!
you did see the part where it's optional right?
also, there are people who are not Muslims that speak Arabic.
The ACLU is not paying attention because they're busy with real problems.
And even if what you say is true, so what? You invoke Allah every time you say "God."
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
