It baffles me that anyone could possibly love a God that would send friends, relatives, spouses, and billions of mostly good people to eternal torture. Even if I were to make it to Heaven, how the fuck would I be able to enjoy my time there with a front-row view to seeing all my loved ones burning?

Note that my response concerns a highly recommended work of fiction. It concerns only the setting of the story and not its plot, nevertheless the especially spoiler phobic may wish to avoid the rest of my comment and read the story instead.
Well, in the excellent short story \"Hell is the Absence of God\" by Ted Chiang, those who experience the light of heaven are literally remade so they are incapable of anything but complete love and devotion to God. So if that were the answer is God will not let you care about those you used to love.
On the other hand, in the world of that story hell is not anything to fear in itself. If you value your friends and family, let alone your mind, it seems by far the better choice.
