Heroism is not for the faint of heart

Editor, Times-Dispatch:

I thought the age of heroes died out several generations ago. I was wrong.

Consider Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin. One doesn't have to agree with his politics to recognize the courage he exhibited by risking his career and, yes, perhaps even his life and the lives of his family in order to break the hold of the unions in the state of Wisconsin. Yes, Scott Walker is a hero.

The strength and dedication he showed to the people of Wisconsin is an example to others who might feel the call to serve their country by putting self last. Heroism is not for the faint of heart.

Barbara Hutton.

Power Skunk

Which would be inspiring for sure, if he were serving his country and not the special interests and Republican party line. Now, should Mr. Walker make similar strides toward abolishing industrial lobbies and chambers of commerce, he might be inching towad 'hero' status. As it is, he's only going along with ideological doctrine. So, fuck him.

Also: nearly a trifecta, got the hard right wing no unions stance, a bit of conspiracy with the idea that someone would go after Walker's life over this. Just need some 'ZOMG jew-run driveby lamestream MSM librul media'. Try harder.

>devaluing middle and lowerclass workers and leaving them helpless before their rich owners
>"serving the country by putting self last"

Heroism is not for the faint of heart, and apparently neither the faint of brain.

Someone described the Randian hero as the fantasy a weak woman, who blames her weakness on the inferiority ascribed to her sex, has of the omnipotent figure she would be if only she had been born with a penis. Such dreary hybristophiles invariably try to browbeat their daughters into the same defeatist worldview, so I really hope Ms. Hutton hasn't got any.

Oh you fail at life...

6/21/2012 9:26:46 AM

He also put millions of dollars first. There's a word for that. It ain't hero.

6/21/2012 9:27:19 AM

Mister Spak

We need a hero to break the hold of the Koch brothers on Wisconsin.

6/21/2012 9:35:29 AM

"Hero" is now a synonym for "crook"?

6/21/2012 9:46:06 AM

Yeah, that evil union hold which requires you and the likes of you to pay public employees a liveable wages. How unfair! How down right un-American! Damn! We should have a friggin' parade for Scott Walker! ... or a perp walk.

6/21/2012 10:01:39 AM

If you get any benefits at all with your job - safety inspections, protective gear, days off for sickness, holidays, any medical benefits or insurance, opportunity to purchase stock in the company- you can thank union member who got their heads busted literally fighting for those rights.

Scott Walker is the most corrupt politician of the age, and the living embodiment of American political and social backwardness. Only in a country where Hitler is considered a leftist could Walker be called a hero.

6/21/2012 11:04:24 AM

J. James

Dude. Brendan. Calm down. Your hyperbole is distracting. Hitler wouldn't be considered a leftist in America, not by a long shot.

6/21/2012 11:35:55 AM

I hate how they automatically saint somebody as soon as he does something they agree with. I believe there is some legitimate argument in reforming public unions. however we cant have that discussion because the right automatically starts looking at everything in black and white, then babbles in tongues when you challenge there extreme position.

6/21/2012 11:41:18 AM

@J. James:

He's kinda right about that one, if you look at the Tea Bagger segment of the American population. The American right now considers Hitler a leftist. It's rather pathetic.

6/21/2012 11:48:36 AM

I like Batman.

As Arizona has shown, popping a politician isn't that difficult. Although I'm sure he received a number of death threats, I seriously doubt he or his family was ever in any danger. I could still be proven wrong, I certainly hope not.

6/21/2012 12:00:58 PM

Scott Walker may have broken the public unions, but now with a Democratic Senate, he probably won't break the private sector unions, Barbara.

And no, I don't like him at all. Yes, I believe outspending his opponent influenced the election.

But only somewhat: it was a recall. And on top of that, a rematch from 2010. In hindsight, Barrett probably didn't have a chance even without the massive amounts of cash.

6/21/2012 12:07:25 PM

Yes, Scott Walker is a hero.

Scott Walker a hero? Walker's a fucking amateur.

My heros are the guys who used to have those pinko union organizers shot dead. Risk an election? What a wuss.

The real heros used to run sweatshops with child labor. Thank God things are headed back in that direction. Jesus is smiling. Heaven is laughing. Praise the Lord, thank you Jesus!

6/21/2012 12:07:43 PM

So Ms. Hutton, you think a 40 hour work week must be too long then huh? Oh guess what, people DIED for the 40 hour work week. You know who died, those brave people who organized themselves into unions so that they might manage to have a shred of power of their own lives. I'd like to see you say that to those who died at Homestead, PA in 1892 or Ludlow, CO in 1914.

6/21/2012 12:36:29 PM

If this belongs here then so does Obamagirl.

People can disagree without being Fundies.

@ J. James:

Dude. Brendan. Calm down. Your hyperbole is distracting. Hitler wouldn't be considered a leftist in America, not by a long shot.

Many wingnuts think that the word "Socialist" in "National Socialist German Workers' Party" is proof that Hitler and the Nazis were leftists.

6/21/2012 1:26:03 PM

Fascism is rampant in the US - Wisconsin is a clear example of this!

6/21/2012 1:33:53 PM

J. James

@Shockna, @dfmfundies
Oh, sure, they CALL Hitler a secret liberal/socialist or whatever, but when it comes to actual right-wing policies like mass genocide and military dictatorship, of course they look on those things with revulsion.

They just happen to think those policies are intrinsically liberal, not right-wing. They're idiots, not necessarily evil.

6/21/2012 1:35:08 PM

It's about time big brave Scott Walker met with the union leaders then, as they have repeatedly requested. But alas no, but as a Koch brother phones he's right on that.

Puppet of the slavers, nothing but.

6/21/2012 2:00:33 PM

To quote Zoidberg: "Is it possible that all this slavery and oppression is smutzing up our freedom lesson?"

6/21/2012 2:11:37 PM

Often Partisan

Fuck Scott Walker.

No other words really.
