I'm entirely pro-choice, pro-gay-rights, and pro-environmentalism not because I hate humanity (quite the opposite, actually) but because I believe that future generations should be able to enjoy as much liberty as they can while living in healthy environments. I think that makes me more pro-humanity than you ever say you'll be.

Satan, the most libeled character of all time? He seeks in the Bible to educate and uplift man; in Genesis he gets man (or woman) to nom the fruit of the tree of knowledge, and in Revelation he leads the world for seven glorious years of peace and harmony, before Jesus comes along to dick everything up again.
I've never understood why Satan has such a bad reputation, considering his Promethian, benevolent attitude to humanity. And especially considering what a jerk God is, what with all the genocide and arbitrary rules seemingly geared to promoting suffering. History (even, apparently, in fiction) is well and truly written by the winners.

@1419919: It's worth noting that before at least the Dead Sea Scrolls, if not the Apocalypse of St. John, the serpent was never actually identified with Satanel. I've even read one claim (that I can't remember the location of...{grumble}) that the serpent was actually the Levites' old, pre-Yhwh god, LEVIathan. They couldn't resist a stealth argument as to who the REAL God of Good was. I just hope serpent-form was the extent of Leviathan's resemblance with Ym and Rahab (maybe also Apsu), though.
Then, with 1 Enoch, you get Gadreel, one of the main Grigori conspirators, specifically identified as the tempter of Eve. But even then, he's not indicated as the main "father of all evil"; that's Mastema, who somehow convinced God to let him turn the ghosts of the drowned Nephilim into demons in order to test and torment humanity. The Apocalypse is the only main document I'm really aware of that specifically equates the serpent and the lord of all evil.
